The price has gone up and version 8 is now available but this seems a very useful program. I now have the ability to transfer files using FTP or DAV from any file manager type program that exists on my PC. I can open files from an FTP site in any application I care to by just assigning the FTP site a drive letter. No more setting up FTP sites in a multitude of programs, just set-up in WebDrive and use the drive letter to reference your files. It has taken a while to set-up the way I need it but I am sure I will make a purchase before my trial runs out.
5.5.0.111 Beta (Nov 21, 2007)
Like a fool I tried the program and registered straight away. Bought the program and found that my PC didn't behave like it should. E-mailed support and was given a fix. But by then I had un-installed the program and my PC has not functioned properly since despite using XP's restore facility. They gave me a full refund but I still have an XP system that doesn't behave as it should. The problem? Only minor but the system tray icons don't display, hide and un-hide as they used to. But I wonder what else doesn't work as it should........
3.70.06 Beta (Jan 29, 2006)
As I've written before I can no longer give The Bat! a 5* rating as there are just too many problems that don't get fixed. This release may be a beta but as it is aimed at fixing bugs it should be fairly stable. I have over 20 bugs registered in the Ritlabs bug tracker, some will never be fixed while many others are put on hold waiting to be fixed.
I recently transferred all my mail to an IMAP account and then set-up a new installation of The Bat! to manage my local copy of the mail. Sadly, as many others are reporting, the IMAP implementation is buggy as difficult to use. Many folders produce spurious duplicates and an incorrect count of messages in a folder. I'll send and receive from the IMAP account's web interface for now, that's how fed up with this program I've become. As I've yet to find another program that has all the functions and facilities that I need so I won't give up on The Bat! completely but I won't support it or sing its praises either.
It is high time that Ritlabs halt the introduction of all new features and concentrate on fixing bugs, there are hundreds logged and while some may be very minor it is very disheartening to report them, have them offically ackowledged and then to see them left unfixed.
7.0.0.152 (Nov 26, 2005)
We waited a long time for version 7 and I can understand people who may have thought that the program was no longer being developed.
Was it worth the wait? I'm not sure it was as there's not really anything in it for me. Version 6 did all I wanted it to. I don't like the ftp synchronisation and will continue to use other programs to keep my web site up to date. In fact the first time I tried it I managed to delete half of my site and I'm still trying to figure out why. Presumably it does work so it must be my settings.
E-mail support is quick although as usual they can't reproduce the very minor bug that I found.
I can't give this a rating of 5 anymore especially bearing in mind bobad's comments about portability.

I was a devoted Total Command user until July this year when I bought a new PC. Where possible, I decided to have just one program of each type on this PC and ZTree won its place as my File Manager. The learning curve can be quite steep yet I am still finding new commands four months later although I have been a registered user for over a year now.
To KSzostek, yes look at all the fixes. That is because the author actually fixes all known bugs and will not release the program until he has. You ask why would anyone want this? Just look at previous reviews that will go into far more detail than I will here.
The setup file is just 1.2MB and it will do just about everything that I want a File Manager to do, not everything, I doubt there is one that does.
Some of my favorite software has been spoiled by useless features, flashy toolbars and menus, sound effects, skins and functions that shopuld be in another program. ZTree is about usability and functionality not looks.

Me too. :o)
I just didn't want to continue with Symantec's Firewall and AntiVirus offerings because although they looked nice they were a pain to install and when necessary re-install. So many part-downloads and re-boots. I now use AVG and Sygate and thought I had escaped the nasty clutches of Symantec as soon as I un-installed the pre-installed version of Norton Security 2005 on my brand new PC.
Now where is that crystal ball I had so I can look into the future to see where I should go next. ;o)

A much needed makeover certainly brings a new an updated look and feel to the site.
But what about those dates? There's some inconsistencies here. Some dates are in the format June 06, 2004 and some 06/01/2004. Please, please bear in mind that we don't all use the US date format and 06/01/2004 to me is five months ago not last week. So either give users an option to change the date format or use the longer version with month show as a three letter abbreviation.
