  1. Review - Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows XP

    8.0 Beta 2 (Aug 28, 2008)

Using XP 32 bit version on XP Home Laptop I have to use the compatibility tab to view BetaNews website.
Perhaps BetaNews need to check their compatibility!
It is still a beta so I'm not going to give it a bad mark.

I'll be interested to see if the popup blocker has been improved and if it also blocks popunder rubbish as well.

  2. Review - Vista Codec Package

    4.5.6 Beta (Jan 1, 2008)

Installed 4.5.5 release to enable audio in WMP 11 when playing DVD's on XP. This now works fine.
Only issue was that when selecting the Favorites menu from within IE7 the Favorites dropdown list flashed/flickered like crazy. Had to reboot the PC 3 times before this issue cleared. I was about to uninstall and try the K-Lite package. Seems OK at the moment. A possible bug that the developer may need to look into?

  3. Review - µTorrent for Windows

    1.7.1 Build 3360 (Jul 17, 2007)

    ballyhairs writes, "singwolf is right"

Seems there is the usual scaremongering going on regarding post v1.6.1 versions and tracking to certain sites.
The truth will reveal itself, without all the paranoid rumours from sites such as the one posted earlier...

I will watch this story with interest.

  4. Review - CloneDVD

    2.9.0.8 (May 21, 2007)

Excellent programme for DVD "backups" provided you have something like AnyDVD. Output quality very good, even with compression needed to fit on single 4.7GB disc.

  5. Review - ConvertXtoDVD

    2.2.0.251 (May 21, 2007)

Can this programme get any better?
    Not really!

  6. Comment - Windows 7: Obviously I've struck a nerve

    2.2.0.251 (Aug 28, 2009 - 7:38 PM)

I've clean installed 7 on 5+ year old hardware. A P4 2.8. I have 2GB RAM and did upgrade a couple of years ago to an Aero capable graphics card. It runs fine and all hardware is working.

I also clean installed it on an HP laptop 2.4 dual core w/ 4GB RAM. The 64Bit version of 7 runs faster than the 32Bit version of Vista.

I enjoy the challenge of installing a new OS, but had the easiest "challenge" with installing 7. I actually had 100% satisfaction with Vista preinstalled on my laptop, but 7 is prettier, runs a bit faster, and uses slightly less memory.

The problem now is at work we use XP, and probably will for at least another 3-4 years. One advantage of XP over Vista/7 is that the you can actually see network activity much more clearly in the network icon(s) in the taskbar tray!

  7. Comment - New Internet Explorer 8 secures, slices, smokes

    2.2.0.251 (Mar 21, 2009 - 2:27 AM)

I was happy with Beta2 of IE8, even more happy with RC1. Now with the final release, I have lost the urge to mess with that fugly looking thing called Firefox. Although I do like Opera because of its underdog status. But I'll be sticking with IE8.

  8. Comment - Microsoft: Vista SP2, Windows Server SP2 betas Thursday

    2.2.0.251 (Dec 3, 2008 - 4:49 AM)

I wish MS WOULD release a Beta 3 of IE8 NOW!

Beta 2 is as buggy as hell. I was nearly going to roll back to IE7, but decided to install Opera 9.62, which gives me a way around the IE 8 Beta 2 bugs, of which there are many.

Not being a huge fan of Firefox, Opera is quite good. Querky, but good.

Pasting an address into the address bar locks up IE 8 Beta 2. Extremely annoying as I copy and past links on a regular basis.

  9. Comment - 'SuperSpeed' USB 3.0 expected to be widespread by 2010

    2.2.0.251 (Nov 19, 2008 - 4:15 PM)

"..and expect widespread adoption that same year? How are they defining that?"

As for USB2, I would expect USB3 to take a year or 3 to make inroads. Laptops won't be upgradeable and desktops will need an add-in card.
It'll take time (some years?) for widespread adoption, and I can't see many advantages for most users. Other system bottlenecks will largely negate any noticeable improvement.

  10. Comment - Intel works on wireless laptop battery recharging

    2.2.0.251 (Aug 25, 2008 - 3:41 AM)

This is all pretty boring really. Funny how the Intel name makes it news worthy.

If you stand next to transmission lines out of a radio/TV transmitter, or near a transmission tower, and hold a flourescent tube near it, but not touching, that tube will light up. Just like magic.

    Isn't that phenomena the same?

That's been around since RF transmission was first invented.
