#3 doesn't make sense to me.
If AT&T's providing the subsidy ONLY when you sign a 2 yr contract with them, that in itself helps AT&T combat unlocking the device for use on other carriers.
They don't need to keep it locked, as the contract pretty much does that for them.
If you want to unlock the phone and use it on another carrier, you'll have to pay a high cancellation fee or pay full price for the phone...
So how on earth could that be a lose/lose for both companies?
Sounds like the exact opposite of that to me...
AT&T gets to provide incentive for people to actually use the phone on their network, and Apple gets to sell more phones without having to cut the price themselves...
