  1. Review - PopTray

    3.1 Beta 3 (Mar 8, 2004)

Yeah, I'll replace my other POP checker with this freebie, which gives me access violations left and right, and throws errors when I try to preview messages. No thanks! I give it a second star for its feature set and general design only.

  2. Review - Sound Control

    2.15 (Mar 6, 2004)

I love this utility, even though I use it only to adjust my master volume. Being able to change or mute the volume with a simple key combo, and having the on-screen display, is pretty neat. The OSD sometimes causes whatever is behind it to be a bit corrupted once it disappears, but that could be a video driver issue, I guess.

  3. Review - RoboForm

    5.8.5 Beta (Mar 6, 2004)

Bah... You CAN store notes with passcards. Open the editor, then do a View > Add Note. Not very obvious, which is why I totally forgot about it.

  4. Review - PopTray

    3.1 Beta 1 (Mar 4, 2004)

I tested not this 3.1 beta, but rather 3.0.3 final. PopTray is a good looking and well-designed program in general, but I got constant access violation errors, and timeout errors when trying to view messages (even though the raw message tab proved that the message had been fully downloaded). Since to me reliability and stability is paramount, I give this a (apparently heretical) 1-star rating.

  5. Review - GetRight

    5.1 Beta 3 (Mar 3, 2004)

I've used a bunch of other download managers, and they all resulted in the occasional corrupted download--so complain about GetRight all you want, you can keep those pieces of junk. GetRight is the only downloader that has never corrupted a download for me. It has some annoying interface quirks (such as needlessly always-on-top windows), but I give it a strong rating for its reliability, which comes first.

  6. Comment - OpenOffice 1.1 Takes Aim at Microsoft Office

    5.1 Beta 3 (Oct 8, 2003 - 3:32 AM)

    > Firebird is the shiznit.

Yes... minus the word "the", and also without the letters Z, N, and I.

  7. Comment - New Napster Set for Beta Launch

    5.1 Beta 3 (Oct 8, 2003 - 3:02 AM)

...you'll actually be able to download files with something better than 192-kbps crap quality.

  8. Comment - Yahoo! Messenger Upgrade Cuts Off Outsiders

    5.1 Beta 3 (Sep 30, 2003 - 4:32 PM)

...That all these morons would stop with the self-interest and settle on a good, solid IM protocol. The Internet community at large would benefit. IM has been around for long enough that such a thing is long overdue.

Can you imagine if you could only send email messages to people who used the same email client as you? It's insane, it's stupid, and it needs to stop. But of course that's being quixotic... the big players don't give a flying dog dung about the users, or technology per se, or the Internet as a whole... just their own interests.

Maybe we need an open IM protocol, which clients like Miranda IM could support. Yeah, I'm being quixotic again--of course the typical end-user idiot wouldn't bother looking into such a thing, what with that cute "Download Yahoo! Messenger" banner being so inviting.

Morons. You know 'em, you love 'em. And they do make the world go 'round.

  9. Comment - Security Rollup Planned for Windows XP

    5.1 Beta 3 (Sep 15, 2003 - 9:48 PM)

This was a rather strange comment... No one has EVER accused Microsoft of being "idiots" when it came to doing business... obviously they are geniuses at doing business and making money. No argument possible.

Where people call them "idiots", or more accurately simply complain, is when it comes to putting quality and security first, and doing right by the customer. If people are "moaning" about the SP2 delay, who is to say they are not justified? You? No, some people want--for a legitimate reason--an integrated security roll-up, prior to one year from now.

And if Microsoft is delaying it so that they can add some fancy new technology (rather than, as stated before, doing right by the customer), they YES, they are wrong. Not "idiots" in the sense of helping themselves to make money, but "idiots" in the sense that they aren't putting customers and security first--AGAIN.

  10. Comment - Messenger Upgrade to Disconnect Outsiders

    5.1 Beta 3 (Aug 27, 2003 - 5:26 AM)

Sure, there is a difference between a "monopoly" and a "competitive advantage", but Microsoft has both. If you need help digging your head out of the sand, I'm here for you.
