  1. Comment - How would you rewrite Google's '10 Things?'

    (Nov 11, 2009 - 7:15 PM)

Google are great. I don't kid myself that if they didn't bring gmail to us, our hotmail inboxes would have continued to shrink down to just a few kb. And when m$ thought they had the browser monopoly they stopped working on internet explorer! Google has never been evil like that. They have tried to provide tools for free use while exploring ways to remain profitable.

I do, however, wish they'd work harder on making linux applications happen at the same time as windows. Chrome was a pathetic effort for ages. And Picasa running on wine. YUK!

PLEASE add PAST MONTH to search options google.

  2. Comment - Windows 7: Vista without the crap

    (Oct 21, 2009 - 12:52 PM)

    REASONS TO NOT UPGRADE:
    1. it should have been a FREE upgrade for all Vista to users so m$ could say sorry for wasting everyone's time with the disaster that was Vista.
    2. Vista presented the perfect opportunity for the world to see that there are alternatives: Linux and Macs
    3. Vista with a new shell does not solve the ghastly security issues that plague this risky platform

This is what is wrong about US law.

  4. Comment - World put on hold as Google News hiccups again

    (Sep 23, 2009 - 11:24 AM)

They had more than just a news hiccup! None of my Firefox Addons for Google Services would authenticate my log on details all day. It doesn't bother me that a free servive sometimes have glitches...what really annoys me is that there is no way of contacting them to tell them what is wrong and that they only ever acknowledge there was a problem if it makes it to the news.

  5. Comment - Google calls Gmail outage 'minor issue', but thousands beg to differ

    (Sep 1, 2009 - 8:02 PM)

As frustrating as it is when my gmail goes down I try not to forget that I am using a free service and that gmail is largely responsible for giving us such great features with free services (remember when hotmail accounts had a 2mb inbox!).

That said, I don't like the idea of web-based office suites and the like because they rely on the assumption that you always have a reliable broadband connection without stupid datacaps (I'm thinking of Telecom New Zealand as an example of bad ISP whose monopoly is still crippling NZ's telecommunications industry).

Free web-based email + locally installed apps is the best solution.
