my biggest complaint about programs like this, and DesktopX is not alone in this, is they don't take into account how I have my system setup. When I install a preset DesktopX theme, I have links to programs not on my system and am missing links to programs that are. When I happen to have a few appls that the theme designer had, they generally are not in the same location and I have to hunt down and rebuild the links by hand. I kind of like some of what these programs offer but not enough to waste my time rebuilding everything each time I change themes. Big thumbs down in my book.

Actually, Teomoa had the toolbar before Google did so Google was just following along too. As for the toolbar idea itself, Microsoft developed this technology specifically for this purpose in the hopes that poeple would create these kinds of services. I'm shocked it took so long to see this sort of thing.

Actually, both the Mac and PC can compete quite nicely with the SGI workstations. Now the SGI mainframes are a different story. 3DSMAX R4 running on a dual P4 2GHZ or dual Athlon system competes with an SGI O2 running Maya. Just for a frame of reference, rezen8, a well known graphics studio who has done motion graphics for just about everyone uses PCs running MAX. You might have seen some of their work during the Nagano Olympics. Get over your snobbish, "my computer can beat your computer because of the sticker on the front", attitude already.

I think Microsoft can get away with ActiveX controls, despite this article, because ActiveX controls can be embedded ANYWHERE, not just in browsers. For example, I can create a powerpoint slide and embed an interactive Director movie within the powerpoint presentation (I actualyl had to do this).

The internet was not built upon the precept of security. The concept of the web was designed so information could flow freely amongst univertsity professors. It was not until the internet became commercial and accessable by private citizens that security became a real issue. Companies are trying to remedy this by patching the current internet but this won't work at all. It's going to take a complete reworking of the underlying plumbing, with security a major focus, to fix the problem.

Be will never release the source to BeOS because it is riddled with licensed technology. To even begin the massive undertaking of removing the licensed code would be too cost prohibitive.
