  1. Review - FolderIcon XP

    1.0 Beta 1 (Jun 21, 2003)

Ok program for what it does, but I still like the Folders Plus in SPT Accessories Plus. It offers more Folder Icon control and you can go crazy with completely changing the folder icons, colors, pictures on the folders, etc...

Check it out at: www.simplypowerful.com - It has been listed on this site before.

  2. Review - Lock My PC

    2.2 Beta (May 29, 2003)

As for the comments that Win95,Win98,WinMe provide no mechanism for locking is incorrect.

Simply password protect your screen saver and just create a shortcut to the screen saver. Then all you have to do is launch the screen saver shortcut to lock the system. (PS, you should also have a password to login as well in case someone physically powers off the computer.)

This program may have a few nice features, it just really isn't needed. Sorry...

  3. Review - AlfaClock

    1.53 Beta 2 (Apr 28, 2003)

For those looking for a lighter version of a clock that uses almost no RAM or resources, check out www.simplypowerful.com they have a product called SPT Accessories Plus 2002 that has a skinable lite clock and also includes several other nice touches that Micrsoft left out of Windows. (Like making the PrintScreen (PrtScr) key really work.)

  4. Review - Tag&Rename

    3.0 Beta 4 (Mar 16, 2003)

Its an ok program, but WMP9 does this automatically and even will file the songs into the proper folders if you let it by cross referencing the song information available to the internet database.

So good program if you aren't a PC user, but if you are, just let WMP9 do it.

  5. Review - NetCaptor

    6.02 Beta 1 (May 8, 2000)

Just curious... What is the difference between having tabs at the bottom of the program and having multiple Windows of IE open, and just use the buttons on the Windows Taskbar?

It just seems silly that this is a feature, when Windows inherently does this for you. Why take up more screen space with another row of tabs(buttons)?

Maybe most users don't realize that they can have more than one browser window open, which is basically what this app is doing.

I'm open to enlightenment, as I am truly curious...

  6. Comment - Windows Update 5 Prepped for XP SP2, New IE

    6.02 Beta 1 (Nov 9, 2003 - 4:18 PM)

    >>best implementation of MDI I have seen ever

And how come no one seems to get that the MDI model was outdated almost 10 years ago?

When Microsoft changed the UI model of windows in Win95, the necessity for things like 'tabbed' browser pages became superfluous.

Why have tabs inside a single browser window, when you already have the 'tabs/buttons' on the Taskbar on the screen already.

IE is a tabbed browser interface, it just seems that no one seems to get the button the taskbar for each open IE windows is the equivalent of a tabbed page.

Windows uses a Document-centric Object Model, and yet people still complain that it doesn't work like a Windows 3.1 program and implement things like MDI or tabbed pages that were necessary in a non-document based UI model.

Please for the love of god, please have someone get this, or inspire them to read about UI design and why things are done different and easier today than they were 10 years ago.

Or is everyone just dying for the day the Windows Shell looks exactly like Unix 1980 or CPM?

  7. Comment - Longhorn and More: BetaNews PDC 2003 Wrap-Up

    6.02 Beta 1 (Nov 1, 2003 - 9:29 PM)

--maybe do something like a 3d rollout for the autohide feature or movable 3d environment for stackable windows and such--

Um, that is exactly what will be happening in Longhorn. It is NOT just transparency. The entire display will be rendered using 3D acceleration technology, and windows, controls, etc can and will be animated with no CPU performance hit, instead - taking advantage of the 3D technology in the Video Adapters.

So you will see animations technology - FAR beyond what is capable in OSX, as the UI model with have a real 3D structure for rendering and interfacing.

Where OSX is a 2D model UI that uses only an off screen buffer for window effects. Longhorn will also use an external off screen buffer, but add the ability of 3D coordinates to take the 'glass' to higher dimensions in Interface capabilities.

Why do you think Microsoft is keeping the basics of what they are going to be doing with Glass under wraps? Most of what is planned for the UI has not even been show publicly, even at the PDC. They have only demonstrated the basis of capabilities, not WHAT they intend on doing with them.

Prepare to be surprised. Not only will the UI provide more ease of use, it will add dimensions of use not even considered in computing today - and using the Video Adapter's GPU instead of the CPU, it will be doing all of this without a performance hit for basic business and regular user applications. (i.e. the same performance you are used to, with nice animations for people that like them, and also animations that are actually functional to using the computer and are not just lame 'pretty' gimmicks to wow newbies.)

  9. Comment - Windows XP Beta Brings AMD64 Support

    6.02 Beta 1 (Sep 24, 2003 - 11:15 AM)

"Can you run Windows on them? "

Yep, since 1992 when the Alpha and NT were both introduced...(Actual release dates were in 1993)

NT was the OS Alpha used to show off the CPU, especially on the desktop and workstation level.

  10. Comment - Microsoft Shows Off 'Athens' PC Prototype

    6.02 Beta 1 (May 7, 2003 - 1:17 AM)

Read Tom's article, and it wasn't negative, just said Microsoft should be doing more with the 3D interface.

The additional question from your post, why would Longhorn render applications incompatible? WindowsXP is the most compatible OS ever engineered, do you honestly think Microsoft is going to abandon this legacy of compatibility?

If you will hate everything Microsoft does, just say so, don't add FUD.

    Geesh...
