  1. Review - Wipe

    2.30 (Mar 27, 2009)

Crippleware. Most Wipe features are in the better organized and better designed CCleaner but worst is the one redeeming feature is only available in the paid version, namely that found in Eraser of randomly rewriting deleted filenames on secure delete (Free Wipe overwrites deleted file contents but leaves deleted filenames, Paid Wipe randomly rewrites filenames and overwrites file contents). For an app named Wipe I consider that deceptive, which misleads into a false sense of security.

  2. Review - Mozilla Thunderbird for Windows

    3.0 Alpha 3 (Oct 15, 2008)

If you have XP (not OE replacement in Vista I've not tested) and aren't paying an arm and a leg for MS Office 2007 (not Outlook 2007 I've not tested) and you want IMAP (GMail with IMAP) so you can have full on and offline functionality synced across desktop and laptop, there is no better email client than Thunderbird I've tested, and I've recently tested quite a few. Thunderbird is very solid and mature, and version 3 alphas show a nice visual refresh in addition to upgrades in functionality and performance. What's not to like.

  3. Review - GnuCash

    2.2.5 (Sep 9, 2008)

2.2.6 has been out since July, but this is my favorite free Windows financial management software. GnuCash has matured nicely with features, functionality and stability.

  4. Review - Joost for Windows

    1.1.4 Beta (Mar 30, 2008)

Joost was a very nice application, although a bit too much emphasis on graphics in the UI; i.e., the old table version of channel selection was better. Unfortunately, during the first Joost update to a live version for the NCAA playoffs I had a popup appear and when my networked apps began misbehaving, I started searching for the culprit and discovered a worm virus. I was able to recover after much work, but I never did get to enjoy live TV. If I ran Joost again, it would have to be in sandboxie.
