2.0 Beta Build 6.0.11.780 (Aug 21, 2002)
This program pisses me off in more ways than one. First, it puts junk on my hard drive in more places than I have time to look. I can't just install it with a shortcut. I have to install it with 50 gazillion shorcuts, each for a different purpose. Then, I have to keep removing crap from the startup group in my registry. This program keeps placing links there so that it can check for updates or whatever else it wants to check. Removing the link doesn't help because when the program is run, it puts the link right back. And if I wasn't pissed off enough already at this point, the program really insists on taking over every imaginable file that it thinks it can play on my hard drive. Trying to change this isn't easy. Oh, no. That would defeat the concept of good software. I have to dig through menus just so Winamp (2.x NOT 3) can play my mp3's, like I want it to, and keep playing them.
P.S. To the person below me: if you're going to write that a program sucks, try not giving it 5 stars. Just a thought.
2.1 Beta 5 (Aug 13, 2002)
Does what it is supposed to do and does it well. Gives different options on how to rename an mp3 file (ie. according to the ID2/3 tag). Easy to use, and even though there may be other programs that can do the same things, thisn one imo does it best. As for those who easily screw up ID3 tags because of not paying attention to what you are doing: imagine what can happen if you don't pay attention to what you are doing while driving. Perhaps now is a good time to start paying attention and not downgrade the program because of your negiligence.
3.0 Final (Build #488) (Aug 8, 2002)
Let me sum up first, and then I'll explain. Here goes: Winamp 2.80a all the way. Winamp3 doesn't quite feel like it's finished. It feels like this should be the next Release Candidate. Yes, like with other major revisions of a program, you have to learn how to do some tasks slightly different in this version. But some tasks you can't even do at all. My biggest problem, but yet so trivial: you can't change the refresh rate on the graphic eq. The bars just moove too slowly for me and there is no way to change that. Also, Winamp3 uses too much memory compared to 2.x. And for a product that adds several visual styles, it just isn't worth it. Also, want to see a big flaw? Go to preferences and then to "skins". Now, select the "Classic" skin. Can't see the preview? Neither can I. Winamp 2 will stay on my comptuer unless these guys can shape up... oh, and get rid of that $&*%#^&ing AOL icon off my desktop, Start Menu, and IE Favorites. I already have internet. Perhaps you should try asking next time...
1.80 Beta 1 (Aug 7, 2002)
Does what it's designed to do, and does it well. The odd time (probably once out of every 1000 times) it gets stuck and can't open a file saying that it's not an MP3, even though it is. A shame though about the PRO version... $$$
2.0.00 Beta 4 (Jul 28, 2002)
Completely useless piece of software. I can do quite well without it, thank you. It takes just about as much time and mouse clicks to shut down my computer the "old fashioned way" without installing anything.
2.0.00 Beta 4 (Aug 13, 2002 - 12:48 PM)
WinAmp (a.k.a. studio in WinNT Task Manager) is too buggy still, and is missing several features from the product that it is supposed to replace. So it may be nice to have a few new features, but they are useless if nobody is going to use the product to begin with. Don't try to complete directly with WMP or the like. If that's what I wanted I'd have used WMP. After all, it only comes with every version of Windows (for free), so it's not like I have to do something to get it.
It's a shame, the features that made Winamp 2 the best player have been removed in Winamp3. As a result, Winamp 2 is still the best player. Perhaps Winamp3.1 or Winamp 4 ...
