VDI - what do you think the old green screen systems and screens were. We did word processing, number crunching, etc in the green screen environment.
We can run a virtual Linux desktop in the VM (Virtual Machine) environment or a standalone Linix partition on the mainframe and give 1,500 to 3,000 users their own server. Then still have the capacity to run other applications such as COBOL, DB2, CICS, IMS and Batch jobs.
We still run some of these processes today because we worked with thousands of users a day requiring 99.9999% availability.
Our server don't go into slow motion when it gets more than 20% capacity being used. It goes up to 99% and even then shuts down or slows down background processes so that the higher priority processes get teh higher priority.
