Patnet,
If you are a basic user you are not missing much,
as it may well overwhelm you -- but if you are
anywhere close to a power user, you are missing
EVERYTHING by not at least trying this tool for a
day or so. Devote it one day, it will pay you back
in years of saved time and effort.
I do roughly 90% of all my interaction with a PC
with ZTree.

1.45 Beta 1 (Oct 29, 2005)
Maybe the problem is this: every time I install
a new version, I lose the association for .AVI files.
Double-clicking on them launches some other player,
not Classic.
So, every time I need to use Open with... once
and tell Windows to remember to use the Classic.

Google Earth realease notes state that Omega drivers
are not supported with ATI cards. Anyone tried it?
1.49.2p Beta (May 16, 2005)
Another new (unique?) feature I've just tested:
sorting files but IGNORING any LEADING NUMERICS
AND PUNCTUATION in the file name!
I opened ("Logged") my C: and D: drives and my W:
file share as a flat list consisting of ALL the
files and found about 198,000 files, about 6000 of
which had leading numbers in front of the name.
I'm talking about automatically generated names
like: 20040115081234_abc.doc, 0003$$$aa.jpg,
01_Beatles_Help.MP3, hundreds of log files of the
34098090983098434_PLAYER_BUILD_1332.LOG type, etc.
Most of the time we have no control over these
"noisy" names, but they are a necessary part of
computing life.
With this new option, the files are sorted as if
they were named abc.doc, aa.doc, Beatles_Help.MP3,
PLAYER_BUILD_1332.LOG, etc., and could be
manipulated in a more "human" way, without the
numeric prefix impacting the sort order. Suddenly,
files that are very much related appear next to
each other, allowing easier cleanups and other
operations.
This new form of file grouping needs to be seen
to be really appreciated -- again, only by admins
and folks who care about keeping in check the
exploding number of files we all have to live
with, but have such a hard time managing!
But with the right power tools, it becomes quite
painless...
1.49.2o Beta (Apr 21, 2005)
An interesting new feature worth looking
into: you can now wipe out all those EMPTY
directories (aka folders) from your disks
with a single command. Most people do this
manually or seach the net for (yet another)
tool to add to their bloated toolboxes.
You may never want to worry about or need to
delete empty directories, but some people,
like admins, do so regularly.
After some googling for "Delete Empty Folders",
I located commercial programs that perfrorm this,
-- and only this -- function.
But it's now just a few keystrokes in ZTree, no
need for external programs or scripts.
1.49.2o Beta (May 22, 2009 - 5:17 PM)
"I hate to sound like an old curmudgeon, but there has never been a file manager as easy or useful as XTree Pro for DOS. The Windows version was seriously flawed, because it did not block the keystrokes used by Microsoft, and allow the key sequences already established, along with all the other DOS defaults, but it still used the same ideas - I have yet to find any other that has that usability, though xplorer² comes close."
Stop looking, it's been here for years: http://www.ztree.com/ :-)
100% compatible with XTree keystrokes and UI paradigm, but Unicode aware, with macros, incredible history recall, Application menu with many tokens. Lightning fast console 32-bit app, split screen, branch view, global view (ALL disks in a flat few, for example).
There is a large following of power users (others, don't bother): http://www.ztw3.com/forum/forum.php
Most have 15-20 years of admin and similar experience. I use ZTreeWin exclusively for everything.
1.49.2o Beta (Jul 29, 2005 - 3:57 AM)
Your approach is what I've been doing for years -- but your tweaks are limited to your own PCs, right?
What if you have to visit/work on 10's of 95/98/2K/XP machines that you can't customize? You are back to the old, slow, vanilla interface(s).
ZTree travels with you on a floppy/USB key/CD/network with all your tools, scripts, keyboard macros and customizations. You have your own UI working everywhere you go and no longer have to worry about the latest skins/icons/themes that disrupt work for *power* users every few years (no matter how aesthetically pleasing they may be).
If you don't consider yourself an advanced PC user, don't even bother with ZTree -- there is a learning curve to climb for regular mouse-clickers :-)

A note to Kramy:
You sound like a sensible power
user tired of GUI eye-candy getting
in the way of productivity and
speed.
