  1. Review - Jetico Personal Firewall

    2.1.0.6 (Nov 3, 2009)

Now have this latest version installed in a XP SP3 vm, as well as Vista SP2 real system and it's running like a charm in both cases :thumb: Finally the issues I'd had with ARP SPI filtering and vm installation are resolved.

  2. Review - VirtualBox

    3.0.8.53138 (Oct 6, 2009)

What can I say other than this is terrific virtualizing software. Installaion of the guest additions is essential, however, to gain the most of its extensive features.

  3. Review - Norton AntiVirus

    2010 17.0.0.136 (Sep 14, 2009)

I'll try to be as unbiased as possible in this review. First, some noteworthy observations during the installation process on my XP Pro Virtualbox guest, using Malware Defender HIPS as the "eyes" to see what NAV is doing.:

    1. the NAV10tben.exe process attempts Internet access even before the installer gets in to full swing. Why would it need to do this? Seems like spying to me.

    2. the program installs no fewer than 18 registry keys in the autostarts locations alone.

    3. 7 kernel drivers are installed.

    3. Internet access attempts are constant with the ccsvchst process after installation is complete. I am constantly being badgered to create an account to activate the product . This is very annoying!

    5. As I am typing ccvchst.exe is constantly reading files, duplicating handles of other processes, setting registry values, and accessing COM interfaces.

    5. Only two running processes using little resources - so this is a nice change from years past.

    6. Seems to be quite feature packed.

    5. Looks to have a pleasing and intuitive interface.

Overall, I give it three stars.

  4. Review - Sandboxie

    3.38 (Jun 3, 2009)

Brilliantly conceived security software! To be perfectly honest, once properly configured, this is the only security software needed to protect one's pc.

  5. Review - Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro (32-bit)

    2009 (6.5.3.2518.381.0686) (May 3, 2009)

Overall a nice, comprehensive product. There should, however, be an easy way of turning off the advertising and it still suffers from the "zero bytes" problem in the firewall logs under Event viewer. It's only these latter two issues that compel me to rate it a 4. The Lifetime license is an excellent deal and certainly worth consideration for those looking for an all-in-one security solution.

  6. Comment - Top 10 Windows 7 Features #3: XP Mode

    2009 (6.5.3.2518.381.0686) (May 27, 2009 - 10:35 AM)

There must be something wrong with your machine then, or you've done something wrong; it is blazing fast on mine and that's even with all visual effects enabled. I'm running the 64 bit RC on a Athlon dual core 4400+, and dual nVIDIA 7900 GTX cards in sli mode. Everything works seamlessly, the nVIDIA pre-release drivers installed flawlessly and believe it or not it's snappier than XP. I've tried a couple different versions of Linux and it's been nothing but a nightmare trying to get video drivers to work to realize full accelerated graphics performance.

This is shaping up to be an excellent effort by Microsoft. I'm sold on it already.

I'll bet he was playing pocket pinball and the "glossy paper" was actually a matchbook that he inadvertently ignited with the thrashing of his fingers, then conjured up the idea to blame the iPod in hopes of suing Apple ;)

    My thoughts exactly!

  9. Comment - 'AutoPatcher' Service for Windows Ordered Shut Down by Microsoft

    2009 (6.5.3.2518.381.0686) (Aug 31, 2007 - 8:27 AM)

"All the others (2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008) connect with the net in the loading process and you can't get out of it unless you unplug the connection,"

Application control software firewall. Your computer will not stop working if you block explorer.exe or restrict how svchost.exe connects. You can even disable the dns service in XP and restrict lookups to your apps that need internet access.
