Immediately, I understand two things about the previous commentors...First, all of you are young--under 25; Second, none of you are creative, meaning that major portions of your income are not derived from creative endeavors.
When will those born in the "everything digital is free for the taking" generation come to terms with the fact that someone needs to pay the price to keep creative material, and those creating it, alive. And don't bother spewing that tired crap about how horrible it is that some "boogey man of big business" owns and controls everything. I hate to break this to you but they do...now shut up and deal with it.
Copyright, patent, and trademark laws are absolutely no different than any other federal, criminal or traffic laws. They were written, and are enforced to protect against blatent infringement and abuse by others of our rights and of our safety.
I've written and recorded two CD's worth of original music. I embrace the internet's ability for allowing anyone on the planet to hear it, and hopefully enjoy it. The model of distributing my music free of charge, so that as many people as possible can listen to it is great. However, at some point, I'd like to be paid. It's how I make my living. Creating the music, and mastering the CD's has taken me 18 months and cost me several thousand dollars. I someone likes my music, and wishes to keep it, shouldn't I be paid? It's no different than if I were a house painter. If I spent 18 months painting your house, and you then told me, "sorry, but I don't feel like paying. Your repressing my right to enjoy a nice looking house for free."
