  1. Review - KDE

    4.2 Beta 2 (Jan 7, 2009)

Try it on Fedora 10 or openSUSE 11.1, it's freaky good.

  2. Review - FreeBSD

    7.1 RC2 (Dec 26, 2008)

If you're not using the extremely friendly Linux distros like Fedora or openSUSE, then you owe it to yourself to load FreeBSD. You get the same look (KDE for me) and tools in a total package that is stunning in this version. Hardware support continues to grow.

The only thing I added was the Bash shell. To do that: pkg_add -r bash or install from the ports. Then run chsh which will give you a vi window, change the "Shell: /usr/bin/csh" to "Shell: /usr/local/bin/bash".

  3. Review - openSUSE

    11.1 (Dec 19, 2008)

Nice to have DudeBoyz' experience with openSUSE. Couple of things to like about 11.1: (1) Many KDE 4.2 features are backported to SUSE's 4.1 implementation, and (2) YaST manager is so much better and faster than it was in 10.3. If you like SUSE, then much like Fedora 10, this is a stable version you can hang with for as long as you want.

  4. Review - Master Converter

    2.8.1 (Dec 19, 2008)

Odd, version 2.8.1 was released early in May of 2008.

  5. Review - EmEditor Professional

    8.01 Beta 1 (Dec 4, 2008)

Thanks for the clarification zhouzh2. Let's admit this: the Windows platform is blessed with several great text editors, most of which are extremely customizable. If the $40 license cost seems too much, it seems to be a lifetime license, as this is the third version my license has worked on.

  6. Comment - Zoho spiffs up its 2.0 version of Writer

    8.01 Beta 1 (Mar 9, 2009 - 7:18 PM)

toolie, you're still trolling and you're still an idiot and you're still using Microsoft. Budroe, you are truly a sad little snit. no wonder betanews is dying.

  7. Comment - DirecTV and DISH Network want compensation for carrying local channels in all markets

    8.01 Beta 1 (Feb 26, 2009 - 5:53 AM)

Dish subscribers already pay extra to view local channels in any market. The crazy thing about this is that "local TV" consists of the big networks, which has been reduced to reality fare and slick, silly crime/DNA shows that have no resemblance to the real world. If I want "local" sports, I still have to pay extra for that package, too. I guess Stupak is pushing the oprah/obama connection since obama is on my TeeVee every single day. (yuck)

  8. Comment - Google execs face jail time in Italy over a user's video

    8.01 Beta 1 (Feb 4, 2009 - 10:14 PM)

Much like creepy D.i.c.k Cheney did today?

*Wow, even a person's actual name is considered indecent. Heckuva filter job there, Betanews!

  9. Comment - Apple secures a patent for a multitouch methodology

    8.01 Beta 1 (Jan 27, 2009 - 4:45 PM)

Jeez, the crap you can patent now is ridiculous. I'm considering patenting baldness and breathing out of one nostril and suing every bald nose-breather. Hey, suddenly the economy is looking up!

Only in America (and Britain) do things get this stupid.

  10. Comment - Analysis: After yesterday, it's time to reset

    8.01 Beta 1 (Jan 27, 2009 - 4:25 PM)

Add my name to those who hate the redesign. The site is visually cacophonous, hard to follow, hard to read, and trust me, your traffic will steadily fall. Orange is a horrid color when most people do one thing on this site: read. We don't need orange stars, headers, titles, or orange anything on a white background. And all the boxes on Fileforum look discontinous. I've found other outlets for news, because the strength of this site is its reporters and commenters. Comments are now placed in a narrow column, forcing me to scroll forever, and now they're restricted within FileForum. FileForum was like Newegg.com, where everyone could come to get a consensus of opinion on any particular app, but now they'll get a pissy snark or an uninformative "It's great!" at best.

So please, please, consider redesigning the site back to the former design, or something/anything more readable than this. It's a complete mess, and until it changes, I'll be at ARS Technica for my news for now.

Can't imagine people harping about bad news. It's a reality, and 2009 will bring increasingly bad news from every sector. Obama will look like an idiot a year from now. However, I didn't see the wisdom of Ballmer's statement; merely that he was stating brute economic fact: "We've no idea where this economy is going other than down. January is completely different from December, so making predictions is irrelevant in this climate," would be a better way to say it.
