Now that it won't be the Blu-ray player that is expected to provide HD viewers with access to media in the outside world, CE manufacturers who still want their brands on the channels to Internet video are looking to dodge the "media PC," and bypass the set-top box, in a maneuver that could still leave brands such as LG and Sony holding the keys to IPTV. Microsoft, Macrovision, and Motorola may all be in trouble.
Even the ravaged economy can't hamper the growth of IPTV on a global basis, according to an analyst report released today.

Now that consumers are pinching pennies, an analyst group is predicting that high-speed broadband prices will fall to levels that will make IPTV a preferable alternative to cable and satellite TV...in some parts of the planet, at least.

At CES 2009, EchoStar previewed a new 1 TB HD DVR with an integrated Slingbox. Combining TV and IP technologies, the DVR will include a touchpad remote control, RF support, and brand new, tile-based user interface.

Sling Media has announced a new product at CES designed to enable remote scheduling on DVRs made by its satellite TV parent company, EchoStar. SingGuide offers much of the same functionality as TiVo Central Online.

Last year, one of the most stunning announcements to come out of CES was from, of all places, Comcast -- a CATV provider. One reason could be because technology is giving viewers clear alternatives to scheduled programming.
