Mira 'Smart Displays' Pushed to 2003

Originally on tap for a holiday debut, Windows Powered Smart Displays will not be available until early 2003, a Microsoft spokesperson acknowledged Tuesday. The technology, formerly code-named Mira, runs on Windows CE for Smart Displays and enables a user to work on a PC from anywhere in the home using a detachable LCD or mobile monitor.

"While the specific launch date is still TBD, Microsoft is working with its partners including Viewsonic, Philips, NEC and Fujitsu to have these devices available in the first quarter of 2003," a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews.

Microsoft will showcase smart displays from NEC and Fujitsu this week at WPC Expo in Tokyo, Japan. But Japanese consumers must also wait until 2003 to try out the technology. While no specific details were given as to the cause of the delay, Microsoft has said it wants to ensure it delivers a high-quality product.

"Microsoft and its partners are first and foremost focused on quality and are committed to delivering a product that will meet the requirements of our customers," the spokesperson said.
