Sony, Cingular Team on EDGE Laptop

Sony on Wednesday introduced the first laptop computer with built-in technology to access the Internet over wireless networks. The Vaio T530 includes an internal modem that is compatible with Cingular's EDGE network.

Although other operators have EDGE-capable networks, the laptop is locked to only work with Cingular's service. It is unclear whether the company plans to "unlock" the PC to allow it to be used on other networks as well.

Along with EDGE capability, the laptops also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth access built in, allowing the user to switch from wireless to Wi-Fi depending on their location.

Cingular is also developing UMTS, GSM's 3G technology; however, the laptop will require an external card to connect to those networks. Sony says it is interested in developing notebook computers equipped with the technology but an official decision has not been made.

"With VAIO products, we constantly strive to surprise and delight with innovative design, record-breaking stamina and advanced technology that people can really use," said Mike Abary, general manager of VAIO product marketing for Sony Electronics. "The exciting combination of our hardware and Cingular's service allows you to go beyond the limited world of corporate, private and public hotspots to get online wherever you happen to be."

Sony will also sell Cingular's service as an option for the laptop. Service costs either $50 a month for 50MB of data usage, or $80 for unlimited access.

The Sony Vaio T530 is expected to be widely available in June, starting at a retail price of $2,199 USD.
