Microsoft Banks on Money 2005

Microsoft is taking Money back to the "essentials". The software giant is banking on having successfully met customers' requests for a simple financial solution that is powerful enough to address their three primary areas of concern: account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills.

Conventional wisdom is that households today have less time to spend picking through their finances than they did in the past. Microsoft seized on this notion as its inspiration for designing a clearer distillation of its Money family of products.

Citing research that projects that nearly 33 million US citizens are doing their banking online, Microsoft has retooled Money 2005 to download clients' account information from banks, credit card companies and brokerages throughout the country. Essentially, this places all of its customers' records in one place.

Microsoft claims that new tools included in Money cut down on the manual entry of account information that has traditionally been required by personal finance software. One such tool called "Spending by Category" automatically generates a pie chart of expense categories using customer specified time frames as the parameter to break down spending into dollar amounts and percentage breakouts.

Another tool called "Spending Average" is designed to assist customers to build their own realistic budgets by displaying a monthly dollar average for each category of spending. A "Favorites" function raises the red flag when any of these categories is identified as an outlier where customers overspend.

Free financial advice is available through MSN Money Web, a Web site where customers can also view balances, check up on investment holdings, keep up to date on market conditions, pay bills and track their spending. Customers are entitled to multiple accounts on the Web site for sharing information with whomever they choose.

On the desktop, Microsoft Money keeps it simple by offering customers abbreviated functionality with features named Essential Register, Essential budget and Essential Reports. The Essential Register produces up-to-date statements and balances; Essential Budget compares monthly spending with the customer's allotted budget; and Essential Reports provides an overview of spending, debt and net worth. Each function has an advanced mode to enable more end user control, tracking and customization.

"The words 'financial management' can strike fear into the hearts of many people who won't stick with a system if it requires a lot of time, sweat and frustration," said M.P. Dunleavey, a columnist for CNBC on MSN Money. "They need a solution that is quick, easy and doesn't involve a lot of ongoing maintenance. Software products such as Money 2005 do so much of the work for you, it couldn't be simpler to create –- and stick with -- a financial system."

Money 2005 Standard Edition is available for $29.95 USD; Money 2005 Deluxe has an estimated retail price of $59.95 USD; Money 2005 Premium sells for $79.95 USD; and Microsoft Money 2005 Small Business is available for $89.95 USD. All of the above are subject to mail in rebate offers. The products are immediately available from Microsoft retail partners or directly from Microsoft at the Money Web site.

I have been using MS Money sinec 2000 and have had many failures to retain data base. The back up and restore are so convaluted that I never get the exact records back.

Since Version MS 2004, every start up they try to get you to use the online features and Money managers.

The backup files .mbf never work for recovery and the working files .mny get corrupted and fail to open.

I am now looking at Quicken.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've been a Money user for the past four years. This 2005 edition has had one of the worst software launches that I have ever seen. Scarey considering that you are trusting this software to keep track of your money and bills.

Many people cannot get Bill Pay to work after upgrading. Synchronization with the MSN Money website does not work for 2005 owners. Some people can't sync with their bank anymore. People have reported that Microsoft has changed some categories without announcing it in advance, which can throw off your expense tracking.

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ and open the Home Productivity -> Money folder to see what others are saying about Money 2005. It's not a pretty sight.

I spoke to MS Support a few times and was told that I would receive a call back one evening. I was told each time that the product is new and that they were not fully trained to support it. Huh??? I never heard back from them. I've got a lot of patience and understanding, but there is absolutely no excuse to tell a customer you will call them back and then never call.

I have since returned Money and purchased Quicken, which has given me no issues at all. Had Microsoft called me back and made an effort to inform their customers of the status of repair for these bugs, I would have probably stuck it out. But come on... it's financial software. You just don't want huge bugs in software that you trust to manage your finances, and the absense of communication on the status of these bugs makes things much worse.

I agree. I just purchased Money 2005, and am still struggling to get it to work, particularly with MSN Bill Payer, which worked well with 2003. The merging of accounts is a total joke. I've had to reload my backup about 6 times. Now my problem is how to back track to 2003 without messing things up further.

I have been using Money 2005 for this week and have had no issues whatsoever. It installed flawlessly, updated from my Monday 2003 file and all the features work. I had no problem syncing wiht the MSN money site. That is a great feature to access your info remotely. I have not used bill pay yet. I like the new interface as well. Great product!

In the interest of fairness, you need to be aware that Quicken 2005 has its own share of problems, most notably that the old .QIF format of data interchange/download has been retired in this edition and has been replaced by a proprietary format that many financial institutions refuse to adopt because of the high cost Intuit is charging them.

Wow!! I wonder from where you downloaded your copy of Money 2005. I have mine working without a glitch, I can sync with my MSN Money and can access my bank and credit card information without a single problem. I also has been a Money user for several years...

You must be the only one not having problems. The technician admits they are working to fix (or to have fixed by partner Yodle) the 12 problems I have. If you use bill pay you are subject to many more.
