3D TV with Touch, Smell by 2020?

It might seem like something right out of the Jetsons, but Japanese researchers are hoping to have a commercially available 3D television on the market by the year 2020.
The television would not only show the scenes in three-dimensional virtual reality, but would also let you experience the smells and "touch" the images on the projection. The images would be projected upwards from a screen that lies on the floor.
Imagine watching a cooking show where you'd be able to smell the dishes the cook is preparing, or be able to touch a new fur coat before buying it on a home shopping network. These researchers would like to make that a reality.
While 3D televisions are already in the works, reproducing smell and touch have proven difficult. Researchers are looking into several ways to reproduce touch, including ultrasound, electric stimulation, and wind pressure.
The movement to create such a television is part of a national initiative by the Japanese government to promote "universal communication." Techniques for language translation and better methods to search for information on the Internet are currently being investigated, a government official said.
The project has asked for 1 billion yen ($9 million USD) in funding for the 2007 fiscal year starting next April.

|Wow, Ppl I believe in Technology in I wonder what it will be like sitting inside a movie.
Smell would be a added feature. Tocuhing some thing is what is in my mind hehee.
I just cant wait to see that and with rapid development in the technology sector I think this will happen sooner.

|Well being inventor of USA patent number 6152829,the details of my invention can be read at www.uspto.gov in the patent number search.
I am glad that the govt of Japan is interested in my invention on DIGITAL SMELLS,
To know more about DIGITAL SMELLS kindly visit my website www.savproducts.com and other site www.trisenx.com .
Its not going to in 2020 it will be much earlier may be in 2010 or even before,
More players in the similar technology boosts the market,we welcome govt of Japan for its inciative on Digital Smells.

|Well, one reason why smell is unpractical to use with movies is the time it takes to change the smell from one scene to the next. Imagen someone cooking in the kitchen, talking to someone sitting on the toilette and the camera shows scenes from both places ... Maybe there will be a bluetooth smelliator

|The idea with the smell might work for marketing, like displaying perfumes on the corridors of shopping malls. But for home use, no way.
The 3D idea is not new of course. There are many 3D solutions already, multiview and single view solutions. For multiview I think philips is the best I have seen till now. Single view I still think the display called Free2C is the best out there.

|I think the cool thing about this 3D tech though, is that you're not staring at a screen. The 3D image is projected into mid-air, sci-fi style.
I'm looking forward to the day when I will have one =)

|I find smell a novelty, just like wincement said. Now 3D pictures, very nice. Expesive, just as novel as the change from Black & White to Color TV.
I don't resist the change, I buy what I like and that how I endorse it. Thats all.

|It is a stupid idea and never will make it to commercial use, it is tried before and all ended up in the garbage bin... WHo want's to run to the store to buy a can with chemicals to make the TV smell...

|to wincement..
the idea is a good idea, it's only the limited vision that makes it stupid.
imagine you want to buy a cologne or perfume and you can smell it on your screen (surely tv and internet will be one by then) before you buy it.
don't be so narrow minded as to think it's a novelty thing where you're watching csi and u can smell the corpses when you don't want to.. (yes that WOULD be a stupid idea)
anyway.. why even bother trying to shoot the idea down in any way at all..
it's amazing to think of the possibilities in the future and this is one of those things to wonder about.. in anticipation
what a boring and narrow mind to have that reads this article and thinks 'what a stupid idea, i don't want to smell everything'

|Thank you for telling me I have limited vision, and a narrow mind.
Amazingly, I have the capacity to think of what you said.
I still think it's a stupid idea.
Those examples do nothing for me. I'm open to anyone who can give a useful application for the technology.
It is a novelty, and a stupid one at that.

|For the smell...nothing comes to mind. But the 3D aspect would be usefull in just about any area of manufacture, as well as medicine and military.
Of course, now that I said that, the smell could come handy in medicine and military as well. Training Medical and Military personell..."If you smell this, GET OUT!"
*shrug*
Still agree with you on the fact that it ain't gonna happen any time soon. 15 years is a generous estimate.

|Umm.... don't get me wrong - I'm all for technological progress - but smellovision is just about the worst idea I've heard of. What about a scene in a garbage dumpster? Does anyone really want to smell everything that's on TV?
The 3D projection idea is pretty sweet though. Can't wait to see a working model...
...in 15 years =/
**EDIT**
Also, the touch technology is a great idea too IMO. It could conceivably be a very useful tool for blind people and/or other disabled people.

|i'd have to say just about the same! i really wouldn't want a TV that could produce smells, artificial type things usually give me a headache anyway :S
Score: 0
|Well... if you watch Fox, that might be a concern. Otherwise you'd think that editors would apply some common sense and only actually include the smell signal where it's a good idea. The TV people want you to keep watching, not turn it off and go puke, all in the interest of ad cash of course.

Check out their heliodisplay, I think that's what it's called. It's an interactive projector. They've been around for some time and are making some great progress.
Just thought I'd share that...

|I'm sure that not only that you'd have the option to completely turn off the smell feature...but they would only send out smells that you would actually like...you won't smell EVERYTHING...just what they want you to smell.
