AOL Pushes Truveo Video Search Platform Globally

AOL's video search service Truveo has launched sites in France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan and UK, with seven more countries to follow.

The international expansion appears to be a move to give Truveo a firm foundation in markets that aren't already entrenched, such as the US.

Truveo was founded in 2004 and acquired by AOL in 2006. Rather than host videos, the service acts as a search engine, pulling content from the popular user-generated video sites as well as major media sites that host clips. Truveo features professionally produced content from major sources like: L'Equipe, Le Monde, and France 24 from -you guessed it- France, Berlin TV, Spiegel and ZDF from Germany, IBN Live and NDTV from India, KBC from Korea, El Mundo, Telecino and Digital+ from Spain, Taiwan Television, BBC, Daily Star, Skynews, The Sun, UEFA and more from the United Kingdom.

The site has been working to provide the content from these local sources to all other countries, and in a short two months, sites in Australia, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Russia and Turkey will be launched.

The shift in AOL's principal business model continues at full speed. Formerly an Internet access provider but with revenue from that end drying up almost completely, AOL finds itself cutting back and rethinking its purpose. After having cut back its workforce by 20%, the Time Warner subsidiary looks to be moving more toward providing content and search features, as well as devising new ways to advertise to the world at large.
