AOL Updates AIM, Adds Streaming Music

AOL pushed a significant interim update to its instant messaging client on Wednesday, adding several new features and giving people the option to stream music to one another.

The new AIM Tunes is probably the most attractive new feature of AIM 6.5. DRM-free music added to a special playlist is streamable when users are online. AOL said the feature requires no separate media player download, and will "respect copyright issues of the music industry."

In addition, the company allows users to add a status message to their screen names, a feature that has been available on other services from Microsoft and Yahoo for several years, and the ability to toggle between text messaging and IM for their buddies.

"As social media booms, we're introducing even more ways to help our users connect," Messaging and Social media head Marcien Jenckes said in a statement.

Other features include new color schemes, the option to add private notes about their buddy, and an AIM toolbar for the web browser. Additionally, a new QQ games plugin, and new wireless options are being added.

AOL said it will supply a short code feature for mobile phones that will be rolled out among major US carriers. By texting 'AIMAIM' (246246), a user can make changes to their buddy lists, send IM's, and change their status message from the mobile phone.

Finally, AOL gave details of its AIM Profiles social networking platform and new AIM Dashboard feature, to debut later this month. Profiles will be an extension of the buddy info feature, while Dashboard will replace AIM Today and allow for greater control over AIM features.

AIM 6.5 is available for download from FileForum.
