Adobe Releases Reader Version 8

Adobe on Tuesday released version 8 of its free Reader product for PDF files, which most notably adds collaboration features through a new "Start Meeting" button. Adobe has also redesigned Reader's interface and added a loupe for zooming in on specific areas of a document.
Other features in Reader 8 include integration with Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server and the new Adobe Online Services Document Center, which enables users to digitally sign PDF files. Adobe has even built in a basic RSS reader into version 8, along with new review and markup tools. The full version of Adobe Acrobat 8 went on sale in November. Adobe Reader 8 is available for download for Windows XP and Vista, with a separate version for Windows 2000.

|I installed it on two computers, and had no problems. My initial impression is that it may be a little faster loading than Adobe Reader 7.08.

|No x64 version, still slow and bloatted.
Better get Foxit as gemal suggested.

|Bye bye Adobe Reader. I've been using FoxIt PDF reader for a long time and it's great!

|Why are you posting about some other software? Either post a comment about THIS software, or don't post at all. Got it?

|If you've used FoxIt PDF reader for so long, why is it you are only now waving goodbye to Adobe Reader?

|I'll keep v8, thanks.. I like Official versions of stuff, not knock-offs that have no real worth but to take up space and not be used (which would exactly be the case if I were to use "FoxIt").

|Apparently people feel superior when they can tell others that they have discovered what they consider to be a niche product that is superior, without recognizing that others might gain little with this other software that doesn't render, print, or produce fillable forms within browsers as well as another product. They see a quick loading viewer, the occasional glitch, the really bad printing support, etc, and figure they can live with these things while raving about it.
But people are strange.

|Has anyone installed it on Vista? I've installed and uninstalled multiple times, but I can't get it to stop crashing.

|My god, an RSS reader? I mean really, WTF does that have to do with PDF's!? I grant that Adobe likes to have lots of features in their reader, that's fine. But at a certain point you start going beyond what is really relevant to what the application is supposed to do. I think RSS support officially confirms that for the 8.0 release. I'm sure someone can argue for its relevancy though. ;-)

|At this point they need to just turn it into a browser and join the battle. :P

|I hope Adobe is going to carry on patching v7 as there is currently a security flaw with no fix.
In large corporate environments who need other languages than English it appears they will have to wait an entire year until versions they can use are available!
When releasing Adobe Reader\Writer products Adobe always screws up as they always;
1. release the writer before the reader so if you want to use any 'new version' only features, you can't as no one will have a reader to work with them;
2. don't release international versions for sometimes months (12 in the case with v8) meaning not all can use the new version at the same time (creates issues for multinationals and their clients);
3. doesn't even bother to release font packs for Asian, CE etc at the same time as the EnglishUS versions so that those who could get away with it could instal that version along with the font packs for suedo mulitlanguage support.
Like so many firms their interest lies in the US and everyone else is an afterthought.
I'm English (UK) in case you wondered.

|This is actually pretty nice compared to previous versions. The interface is very clean and nice looking, no more Yahoo button or other useless clutter. Loads almost instantly on my system, not sure why people are complaining about speed. Yeah version 7 was definately a pig but I can't find any faults with 8. Sure it's larger than some of the alternatives like Foxit but in the days of 750GB hard drives and 2GB of RAM I don't really think it's a problem.

|Acrobat Reader is just too slow. I haven't tried this new version, but I don't like sitting there waiting for version 7 to load. I don't have 2GBs of RAM but I do have 1GB, which should definitely be enough. I like Foxit a lot better, it is a very fast simple reader.

Not a problem in practice; but in principle.

|Actually, btn, I can't stand OSX's built-in PDF reader. When I'm on a Mac, I use PDFView:

|Adobe Reader 8 is also available for Mac OS X. Most Mac users will be happier with the built-in PDF capabilities of Mac OS X.

|I have an strong attitude against even-numbered product versions, and Adobe Products are no exception... 6.0 was a nightmare, and 8.0 doesn't seem to offer anything worthwhile. Do we really need to "collaborate" about PDF files?

|Adobe Reader is bloated sluggish crap.
FoxIt PDF Reader is ultra faster, takes almost no disk space and opens all PDFs the same as original Adobe...

|Agreed. Although FoxIt isn't perfect in it's rendering, it's 99% there, and definitely worth it when you consider the massive difference in performance and resource requirements.

|Sadly it's not 99% there, maybe 90%, which isn't good enough for serious use.

|they have done really well in this version, it renders so much faster, no more sluggish feel on advanced PDF documnets (which FoxIt PDF can't render at all, and most deffiently doesn't like the fonts being used), the loading times have also been reduced,
all in all, great job by Adobe, clearly this product (reader version pnly) is now reaching it's final stage, and i can't see any more improvements happening for a while,
at least they can now focus on there flagship version more now, must be a nightmare developing a reader and not able to charge for it?
note, FoxIt PDF is a simple viewer and will never replace Adobe reader for pro's. or people that require 100% acruacy, ecspecially when printing,
FoxIt PDF - simple viewing, print out don't have to be 100%
Adobe Reader - viewing must be 100%, printing must be 100%, viewing very advanced PDF files.
i opened up a 342 page PDF file, and this version 8 is very quick, and about time adobe optimized there rendering engine,
and as for the rss feed, may have something to do with there flagship, or maybe there planning to add some more features within this subject to there flagship version.
