Apple launches 7.2 Mbps HSDPA iPhone 3G S, $99 iPhone 3G

After a lengthy presentation about the free iPhone 3.0 update (which will cost $9.95 for iPod touch users on June 17) and software support from third party companies such as Line6, Planet Waves, Zipcar, ngmoco:), gameloft, Pasco, and TomTom; Apple unveiled its show-closing announcement, the iPhone 3G S, "the fastest iPhone ever made."

iPhone 3GS

The unit will differ from the previous iPhone generations in that it will support 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, include an Autofocus 3 Megapixel camera with a 30 fps video mode, an internal magnetic compass, improved battery life, and hardware encryption and come in 16 GB and 32 GB varieties for $199 and $299 respectively. Outwardly, the device looks identical to its predecessors, and offers a similar 3.5" multi-touchscreen, volume rocker, sleep/wake, and single home button.

The iPhone 3G S will be launched on June 19 in the United States, Canada, France, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy and will continue rolling out across the world throughout the summer.

Meanwhile, before the launch of the 3G S begins, the 8GB iPhone 3G drops in price to $99.

Nokia 5800 (3.5G HSDPA) unlocked $14.95 unlimited data FTW. Check it at Newegg - includes 8GB removable micro SD.

Never ever will I again purchase a phone directly from AT&T or a Partner that requires a new or extended contract, they lock you in to the same data plan as the $14.95 (or $10 if you get unlimited family messaging) data plan for a non smart phone, unless you buy from a retailer unlocked at a non-commitment price.

Not to mention Symbian S60 5th edition OS.

Is there a similar Nokia with a physical qwerty keypad?

Like the feature-set, but would *love* it if it flipped or slid to reveal a full qwerty keypad.

You would want the Nokia n97 32gb removable memory support, also 3.5G.

Of course it does, it's not apple..............

I bet you're pissed after paying top dollar on launch day for your antiquated iPhone. Too bad, so sad.

There goes the last bit of mystique this product had left. Now every common slob can afford one and internetworld7 is no longer "special". Just another California loser who thinks having an iPhone make him appear wealthy.

Apple products are dropping in price because of the economy, once you go this low, there is no going back.

I also love the current iPhone users stating "there is no reason to upgrade" when you know they are pissed about being stuck with old technology. It's usually the first reaction when a product is replaced with a better faster less expensive model.

At least people like internetworld7 have their personalities to fall back on ...... or not. I forgot he's a typical California two faced f**got.

What a load of BS. Look the 3.0 update will do enough to my iPhone 3G to that I don't need to go and spend another couple of hundred quid. The iPhone 3G S is NOT a significant enough update - yes it is from the iPhone 1st gen, but not the iPhone 3G. Simple as, simple as. Even when my contract expires in May next year I don't think I'll upgrade. I do actually want the Pre and I expect by then there'll be a Pre 2nd gen out. So all bets are off - if you've got an iPhone 1st gen then it makes sense to get the iPhone 3G S, but if you already have an iPhone 3G it does not.

EDIT:
____
I'll tell you something though, I've read a lot that says iPhone 3G S will have recording capabilities. If the 3.0 update doesn't allow my existing iPhone 3G to record video, then as sure as eggs is eggs I will be unlocking my phone and installing Cydia. I've resisted it until now waiting for the update to be released, but if Apple let me down I'll be unlocking it.

1st Gen user here, and I plan on getting the 3G S because it makes sense and your argument is right on. I resisted the 1st 3G because of the poor battery. My 2 and 4 year old would have me charging my phone constantly (Yes, they are so tech savvy they can use the device properly!) Whats best is I will only have to wait till September for my 2 years, and that is a good enough time for the activation bugs and supply bugs to get worked out!

You are so right on point with that comment! Before you know it there will be "authorized resellers" selling em on corner stores. Thats if Verizon can get a foot hold and become a seller too.

Yea, but 8Gb isnt a lot of space anymore, especally since almost a gig is being held by the system for saved files, texts, and so forth.

As a mac user and an iphone 3g owner, i feel let down by the new iPhone. I can't see any reason to upgrade to iPhone 3gs. They could have used a better camera being that sony have a 12 mega pixel in their phones. As for snow leopard, not sure its going to be as fast as they are making it out to be.

A higher pixel count in cameras doesn't always represent a better quality image. Plus after awhile it only matters if you're printing out on a large piece of paper or zooming in on something.

I think if you have the iPhone 1st gen or you don't have an iPhone at all then it makes sense to get the iPhone 3G S. But there's not enough changes to make you upgrade from iPhone 3G to iPhone to 3G S in my opinion. Yes it's a different phone but it's not really that different enough.

Should you upgrade to a new piece of equipment every time it's been discontinued? No.

Be happy that your iPhone 3.0 OS upgrade won't cost you a thing, compared to my iPod touch upgrade and on the high megapixel count cameras, squeezing more people onto an overflowing bus doesn't it make it more comfortable to sit, does it?

The new camera has auto focus instead of fixed focus so more things will be in focus now.

As a Mac and iPhone user myself I was more excited to hear about the new features of Snow Leopard though. I was disappointed to see that there is still no flash for the iPhone; That's a real bummer actually.
