Apple Debuts New Aluminum and Glass iMacs

As expected, Apple on Tuesday unveiled its latest version of its iMac computer line, with new aluminum and glass enclosures at a cheaper price than their predecessors.

The 17-inch iMac has been discontinued in favor of two 20-inch models and a high-end 24-inch version. In all cases, both the keyboard and the computer itself are thinner than previous versions.

The entry-level 20-inch model uses a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and costs $1,199, $300 less than the previous generation, while a faster 2.4GHz version retails for $1,499.

The 24-inch model includes a 2.4GHz processor and costs $1,799, which is $200 cheaper than the previous generation. Customers can upgrade to a 2.8GHz processor as a build-to-order option.

Other build-to-order options include up to 1TB of internal storage (depending on model) and up to 4GB of RAM. Apple has also included the new iLife '08 with all models.

"This new iMac is the most incredible desktop computer we've ever made," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Our new design features the innovative use of materials, including professional-grade aluminum and glass, that are highly recyclable."

Apple has been taken to task for its apparent lack of environmental consciousness in some of its designs by several ecological awareness groups. Jobs has personally responded to it, even taking efforts to look within the company to ensure its products were held to high environmental standards.
