Apple Speeds Up MacBook Line

Apple updated its popular MacBook line on Tuesday, giving the laptops faster processors, more memory, and larger hard drives across the board.

The MacBook is a huge hit for Apple, and the company said the line is one of the reasons why Mac sales are growing at a rate three times that of PCs. The updated MacBooks will be available immediately from both Apple's retail locations and partners, as well as online.

The two white MacBook models come in 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz versions with Intel Core 2 Duo processors, retailing for $1,099 and $1,299 USD respectively. The black model includes the 2.16GHz chip and carries a retail price of $1,499 USD.

All three models will now include 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, and hard drive sizes of 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB. Customers would be able to request up to 2GB of RAM and 200GB of hard drive space as a build-to-order option, the company said.

Other build-to-order options include the Apple USB Modem, Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter, Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, an airline adapter, as well as the company's protection plan. Customers could also request iWork '06, Logic Express 7, Final Cut Express HD 3.6 or Aperture 1.5 be preinstalled for an additional cost.

The update is the first for the MacBook line since October of last year, when Apple introduced Core 2 Duo processors.
