Brightcove Offers IPTV Creation Tools

Internet television service Brightcove said Monday that it had signed a deal with AOL to use its video service to help content owners sell videos. In addition, it unveiled the Brightcove Network, an offering that allows for the creation of Internet video channels at little or no cost.

The IPTV service has been fairly active in both expanding its reach, as well as bringing new content providers into the fold. Brightcove signed a deal with DVR service TiVo to bring content to Series2 boxes in May, and followed that up with deals with Sony BMG in June, and Warner Music Group earlier this month.

In addition to the Internet video channel creation tools, Brightcove is also introducing a video advertising network, and downloads for either purchase or rental. All of this is tied together through a new Web site, now in beta, which the company says makes the process of discovering content easier.

While these tools will be offered at no cost, the company will make money through other means. Ads will be included in created channels, of which 50 percent is split between the content owner and Brightcove. Additionally, if the content owner decides to sell videos, the site receives 30 percent of the sale price.

"In the last six months we've seen explosive growth in the online video market, especially in consumer sharing, but this is only the beginning of the Internet TV era," Brightcove chairman and CEO Jeremy Allaire said.

Brightcove's relationship with AOL would give content creators another outlet other than brightcove.com to sell their videos. The revenue split here would be the same 70/30 spilt that is used on the main site.

"Our relationship with AOL is giving Internet TV programmers a powerful new channel to reach consumers, build audience and generating revenue through sale of high-quality digital video," Allaire added.

All videos added to the service would be searchable via AOL's video search function and browsed through on AOL Video. The two companies are also looking into other ways to expand the range of services available to Brightcove content providers.
