CBS Debuts Web Television Network

CBS on Thursday debuted Innertube, a Web-only television channel that will feature original programming and eventually reruns of the network's hit shows. Content will be free and ad-supported, with most being targeted towards a younger audience, the network says.

Like a similar service from ABC, Innertube utilizes Flash and RealPlayer, meaning the content would be viewable by both Mac and PC users. Original programming includes shows such as the college-centric "Greek to Chic" and shows that are based off the hit series "Survivor" and "Amazing Race."

Network execs are describing the programming to be shown on the network as "edgy." CBS executives say they see a large revenue opportunity down the road as more and more advertisers turn to the Web. However, CBS is not the first network to launch Internet programming.

ABC is now offering hit shows like "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" on the Web the day after they air, and NBC has turned to iTunes to market its content online. MSN and Yahoo will soon offer original programming through their portals, and AOL has begun offering classic television shows from the Time Warner vault.

Initially, Innertube's programming will be 100 percent Web-only, however the network would eventually begin to air shows like "CSI: Miami" and "Without a Trace." Classic CBS shows will also be added to the lineup, although executives have declined to provide a time frame.

The Wall Street Journal reported that initial advertisers include Cadbury Schweppes PLC and Verizon Communications Inc., which will buy 15-second commercials within the programming that cannot be skipped. Additionally, the network said its Web-only shows provide a product placement opportunity as well.
