DirecTV Expands HD Channel Lineup

DirecTV said Monday it had expanded its channel lineup to 72 high-definition channels for those subscribed to all of its premium lineup, part of an effort to offer customers 100 channels in HD by the end of this year. Even without the premium HD channels, of which there are about a dozen, the company's lineup far exceeds that of any other provider at the moment.

The standard HD package costs $9.99 per month, and includes those HD channels that are tied to their particular package. For an additional $4.99 monthly, the company would give access to all non-premium HD channels in its lineup. All HD packages also include local channels in HD where available, the company said.

More and more they look like a much better option, not to mention cheaper, than sucky Time Warner & Cablevision + the former's horrendous customer service.

For now, i will drop Roadrunner cable tv in favor of satellite-- while keeping only their broadband... esp. since its standalone internet access does NOT anymore cost an extra $10(for not also being a cable tv customer).

More importantly though, i will be moving to a Verizon Fios neighborhood-- solely for that reason.

Make sure you get the old HD Tivo for recording, the new DirecTV DVR really sucks comparatively :(

This is good news about the added channels though, I have had DirecTV for a long time :)

The old Directv Tivo's will not work with the new HD Channels.

I used to think that. I had a DirecTivo before I went HD. The HR20 has been great. No problems at all.

And I only get 7 HD channels though my cable provider. I need to switch to dish.

I know I love it. SciFi is in HD and I don't know if Stargate Atlantis or others are in HD but they look it. I'm glad that I left TimeWarner saving money to boot. Now if they'd would get the Comedy Channel I wouldn't have to watch low-def again.

Superfan package. All games (except 1) each week in HD, Red Zone Channel HD and 8 games on one channel called Game Mix that you can switch audio to whatever game you want.

I also got every movie channel for four months, a 50 dollar gift card and a one year free of Napster for signing up for the early bird package.

That's true but I've seen a bunch of new channels show up this week. I can't watch anything in standard def anymore.

Besides, launching a fleet of satellites is not cheap. They can run a billion dollars each.

Hey; I'm all for paying up to $100/mo for TV. It just seemed deceptive is all. If only they'd rent you equipment like Cable...

I'm tired of their ads saying $29, saying "the most HD", and in fine print, it's another $10 for "HD access". There's something not right about that...

Not bad if you ask me, Dish's HD packages are $20.

DirecTV is therefore $10 cheaper.
