Disney acquires popular iOS game maker Tapulous

TechCrunch is reporting this afternoon that iPhone OS game developer Tapulous has been acquired by Disney, and the team of developers and executives at the startup will join the staff at Disney Interactive Studios.

Tapulous has released a slew of rhythm games in the vein of Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution, which began in 2008 with "Tap Tap Revenge." That title went on to be the most downloaded game in the app store that year, and was later ranked "game of the year" for the iPhone/iPod platform. Since that time, the company has released some 14 different versions of the game for iOS ranging in price from $0-$3.99.

Disney Interactive's offerings in the iTunes app store are mostly limited to those focused on Disney's trademarked characters, such as Phineas and Ferb, Mickey Mouse, and The Muppets. However, there are a few noteworthy titles from the company that have been released this year that have nothing to do with Disney movie licenses, such as puzzle game Breakspin, and racing game Split/Second (which is based on the Xbox 360/PS3 title from Disney Interactive.)

Since the Tap Tap Revenge games are based on playing along to music, Disney could use the series as an outlet for Disney Music Group artists such as the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, High School Musical, and many more.
