DivX is coming for Blu-ray players, while PS3 could lag behind
By Tim Conneally | Published March 12, 2008, 2:15 PM
The single most popular Blu-ray player sold today isn't even a dedicated console, it's the Sony PS3. As we learned today, six forthcoming dedicated Blu-ray players could get something the PS3 lacks: total DivX support.
DivX announced today that six new Blu-ray players will soon come to market that have all achieved complete DivX certification. This means Panasonic, Phillips, and Denon will soon have players that fully support the format, allowing more than 25 hours of DVD-quality DivX content to be burned onto a single Blu-ray disc.
The forthcoming DivX-certified models announced are Panasonic's DMP-BD30EE, Philips' BDP7200, and Denon's DVD-2500BTC1B, DVD-3800BDC1B, DVD-3800BDSP and DVD-2500BTSP.
Sony's PlayStation 3 firmware upgrade last December included DivX functionality, bringing the popular codec into what is presently the most common Blu-ray player in the US. And DivX Inc. acknowledges that the PS3 is indeed "capable of DivX playback," though its use of the term "capable" could be synonymous with Microsoft's, as in "Vista capable."
Recent tests have shown that the PS3 player exhibits reduced functionality in its DivX playback, lacking the ability to play files over 2 GB in size, files encoded in DivX 3.11+, and copyright protected files. That's somewhat less than "DivX-certified."
A DivX spokesperson told BetaNews that the company is working with Sony to bring the PS3 up to full certification. At least until then, there now appears to be a bit more incentive to purchase a dedicated Blu-ray player.
Everyone knows Divx is for the bootleg market and thats where it should stay. Lets concentrate on H.264 (x264) or the little guys like DivX's counterpart Xvid. I really don't want to see Divx slapped in our face cause for the quality it aint that good.

|I think that Sony will bring the PS3 up to full DivX certification within 2008, they have been pretty good at sorting out firmware updates and it should not be too hard. I believe that the 4GB fat32 issue is a more prominent one because NTFS is a file system created by Microsoft and so maybe Sony cannot use it. I don't see why Sony can'y bring out a firmware update that allows you to create/format a Sony Partition System partition on an external USB drive, the same file system as on the PS3 and it is not limited at 4GB. Sony could quite easily create a windows driver for the file system so the USB drive could be read by a windows PC.
Maybe it is just wishful thinking but something needs to be done to allow the PS3 to access files larger than 4gb on an external USB drive as many HD movie files use the 264 codec suported by the PS3 but are over 4GB sometimes up to 20GB.

We all know he's DaveBG anyways, plus he's the biggest follower I have ever come across without a mind of his own who still has to convince himself that the PS3 and everything about it is superior to the 360. Why?
Because he's not sure that his "huge" investment, which is probably a months salary for him was the right choice. His post have nothing to do with anything other than he is still trying to convince himself.

|I am not sure Sony can do anything about the file 2GB issue. It seems to treat all files not native as if they exist in a FAT32 world. The PS3 disk system seems to be FAT32 or a form of it for all non-native files.
FAT16 or FAT32 is all it will read from thumb drives, USB drives, or ram cards.
So I am not sure what the deal is. If the PS3 uses a custom file system why have a 2GB cap? And why not support NTFS for external drives? And be rid of the 2GB file cap.

The article makes it sound like it won't play them back period so I guess clarification will be needed. To be fair though the 360 can't play back DivX 3.11 files either, but it can still play back divx 5 and up, xvid and others with no file size restraints. I don't think it does protected content though, but no surprise there.

|Not sure if I've seen *any* non-certified DivX devices play back 3.11 stuff.
I've had both "capable" and "certified" players. The only one's I've had no issues with are the certified one's.
So saying an un-certified system is having issues is kind of redundant IMO.

|PS3's support is more complete and official than the 360's, as Microsoft arn't even certified for DivX and have no licencing agreement in place with DivX networks, and use he term
The other point, is DivX 3.11 support was never offical, as was a hacked Microsoft codec, and thus not required for full DivX certification.
If you are going to write articles, please get your facts correct.

The Xbox 360 supports files encoded using MPEG-4 Part 2, Simple and Advanced Simple Profile. These files are often referred to as Xvid or DivX® video files. Many common PC DVD authoring tools, cameras, and camcorders are capable of encoding files using MPEG-4. Note that some files authored for DivX devices may also contain additional functionality(menus, subtitles, multiple audio tracks, etc). The Xbox 360 will attempt to play these files, but does not support any of the additional functionality and in some cases will be unable to play the file.
16. Why don't some of my older versions of DivX® files play?
Since we only support Mpeg-4 compatible codec implementations, we will not be able to play video files older than DivX® 5.0.
