Garmin multi-platform search software adds Google features

Garmin, makers of popular handheld navigation devices, has announced the availability of Google Local content in its Garmin Mobile software, available on numerous handheld platforms.

Though many of its Nuvi devices are equipped with MSN Direct to provide detailed data such as gas prices and realtime traffic reports, Garmin has recently paired with Google to deliver premium content in its handset navigation sector.

Google Local was noted as a built-in feature in the forthcoming Garmin nuvifone at 3GSM in Barcelona earlier this year. The personal navigation device company has now upgraded its cross-platform subscription-based Garmin Mobile software to include Google's database of approximately 6 million detailed location entries. Searches can be performed to find points of interest based not only upon their proximity, but also their quality as supplied by user reviews and ratings.

Blackberry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile handsets are all compatible with Garmin Mobile, but require either a Bluetooth-enabled device or one with a GPS receiver already built-in. Non-GPS phones must be paired with an external satellite receiver, and all phones require a data plan to connect to Garmin's servers for mapping features.

The service ranges from $99-$299 with the average hovering somewhere around $199.99, and the newest version of Garmin Mobile is expected to come to retail in July of this year.
