Gateway Announces New Dual-Core PCs

Gateway on Thursday launched a new line of desktop PCs aimed at the back to school market, featuring Intel dual-core processors and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 across the entire line. The new machines are also built on a BTX chassis, which is a modification of the old ATX design.

The BTX chassis claims to provide better air circulation and heat dissipation for today's faster processors that give off more heat. Another positive of the chassis is the limiting effect it has on acoustic noise within the computer, producing a much quieter system overall.

The top-of-the-line 840GM will include a Pentium D 830 dual-core processor running at 3.0 GHz and 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM. Also standard with the system will be a TV tuner, DVD+/-RW, DVD-ROM, and a 250GB hard drive. Three FireWire and seven USB ports are also included.

The retail price for the 840GM will be $1,049.99 USD.

The 835GM, a step down from the 840GM, features a Pentium D 820 dual-core processor running at 2.8 GHz, with 1GB of RAM and the same features as the 840GM. The machine will retail for $849.99 USD.

Along with the new Media Center PCs, Gateway also announced new 64-bit dual-core BTX systems across other portions of its product line. The FX400 series will include the processors along with either 512MB or 1GB of memory standard, DVD rewritable drives, and up to 250GB hard drives.

Prices will range from $1049.99 USD for the base model to $1999.99 USD for the high-end FX400 model. All computers include a monitor.

Isn't it the eMachines division that generally uses AMD processors? (ironically enough because they were already using AMD and being profitable before they were "bought" by Gateway) I would say it's a matter of price in this case. AMD has yet to have enough dual-core production to lower the price.

I'm no fan of Intel, but at this initial stage their dual cores do best amd's dual cores... check out Tom's Hardware tests...

No, only with Hyperthreading do the tests lean towards Intel AND only if you want to encode video, rip music, and play FarCry AT THE SAME TIME, and still only the music ripping is faster with intel, but on TomsHardware AMD ousts Intel on EVERY INDIVIDUAL TEST. You know anybody who encodes video and plays 3d games at the same time? Try reading Tom's Hardware again...
