Gmail Gets Chatty

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

February 7, 2006, 10:48 AM

Google debuted Gmail Chat on Tuesday, a service that would allow users of the client to start instant messaging chats from their Gmail account, as well as save their chat like e-mail messages or see when contacts are online through the Google Talk network. The features are very similar to those recently added to MSN's Hotmail service and Yahoo's mail client. The service will work with either the Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 1.0 browsers.

Gmail Chat will also synchronize a users Quick Contact list with his or her messaging contacts list to show a list of that person's most frequently contacted buddies. When a chat is initiated from this list, a chat window would open from within the browser, thus eliminating the need for the user to download the standalone Google Talk client.

Think of it this way:

Microsoft = The hordes of Mordor.

Google = The forces of Saruman.

*You* get to be Frodo.

Now get ye gone before the nazgul get ya.

(btw...I'm rooting for the nazgul)

In 3017, near the beginning of the story told in The Lord of the Rings, Sauron commanded the Ringwraiths (Nazgûl) to recover the One Ring of Power from "Baggins of the Shire". Disguised as riders clad in black, they sought out Bilbo Baggins who, as Gollum had revealed, had the One Ring in his possession.

The Nazgûl at this point were dependent on their black horses for transportation. When they were swept away by the waters of the river Bruinen, their horses were killed. The Ringwraiths were forced to return to Mordor to regroup. They reappeared later mounted on flying creatures, at which point they were referred to as Winged Nazgûl.

I am now, officially, a nerd.

Thanks for that.

Nazgûl means 'ring-wraith' in Black-speech.
Naz is generally a ring throghout the work.

These nine Men corrupted by the power of Sauron's Nine Rings, and transformed into his dark and deathless servants didn't have Tolkien himself put names, but several games 'invented' them.

from Akallabêth:
'...among those whom he ensnared with the Nine Rings three were great lords of Númenórean race'

Murazor (the Witch-king himself)
Akhorahil
Adunaphel

have Númenórean names, other enslaved souls:
Khamûl (second in rank after Lord of the Nazgûl, the only Tolkien's name)
Dwar
Ji Indur
Hoarmurath
Ren
Uvatha

And it is believed that the Nazgûl were suffering from Hydrofobia (several stories among the proffesor work) so that is the cause why water was doing soooo much harm to them.

It's more than that:

If you turn the service option on, anything you say in an IM conversation using the Google Talk network is logged in your Gmail account. You don't even have to use the Google Talk client. I have the account enabled in Gaim on my computer, and the logging works perfectly.

I think it's pretty nice for that fact. It's a portable log of your IM conversations that you can access from anywhere. I've always logged my Gaim conversations anyway, so this is just another way to access those logs for me.

That's all I need... a log of all the inane conversations I have throughout the day.

What would be even better is if they tied it to Blogger so I could post them and subject helpless web-travelers to it.

I like torturing helpless web-travelers. It's fun. You should try it sometime.

That does sound fun. I'll give it a go.

BTW, I use IM for work a lot, so the logs actually are useful to me. We don't have our own IM network setup (yet). That's coming soon, hopefully.
