Google upgrades Docs, cross-promotes Memeo Connect to pull in Office users

Often, when a big company releases a new piece of hardware or software, smaller companies will launch their own products that ride in the bigger product's proverbial draft. But this time, One big launch has rolled another smaller launch in with it.

Today, Google announced it will be expanding the storage capacity of Google Docs to 1GB, and allow single files up to 250 MB to be uploaded, which opens up the ability to upload other file types such as raw graphics files or zipped archives. Word documents are limited to 500 KB in size, and PowerPoint presentations are limited to 10MB, but the general limit is still many multiples higher than the maximum Gmail attachment size.

When Google announced this upgrade in its enterprise blog today, it mentioned a few third-party services that help in the synchronization with -- and migration to -- Google documents: Syncplicity, Manymoon, and Memeo Connect for Google Apps.

But Memeo Connect only "launched" today to fit with Google's announcement, its software will not actually be available until January 18th. It's a desktop application that continually syncs files from the desktop to the Google Docs filesystem and renders Google documents as Office files for offline consumption and editing.

Memeo Connect for Google Docs

Memeo markets its Connect product as a "vital bridge for the massive Microsoft Office install base and the fast-growing number of businesses deploying Google Apps for their enterprise." Like its other products, Memeo Connect is licensed out on a per-user basis and incurs an annual subscription for each user, and also requires a Google Apps Premiere edition account which incurs another $3.50 per gigabyte per year.
