Google Preparing to Launch IM Service

By Nate Mook, BetaNews

August 23, 2005, 11:49 AM

Google TalkSpeculation abound late Monday regarding Google's oft-rumored plans to launch an instant messaging network that would compete with AOL, MSN and Yahoo. The New York Times reported that a Google communications service would launch Wednesday, and the LA Times confirmed it would go by the name "Google Talk."

Although such rumors have long proliferated throughout the Internet and are usually taken with a grain of salt, Google has activated talk.google.com. In addition, a messaging service utilizing Jabber -- an open source instant messaging platform -- was found to be running on that sub-domain.

Google is remaining mum on its plans, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill. Google Talk is expected to go beyond just text messaging by integrating voice communications like those found in rival services.

By utilizing the Jabber protocol, Google Talk could additionally connect with users of America Online's AIM and ICQ networks, along with Apple iChat users. If Google is to break into the already crowded IM marketplace, such compatibility may be a prerequisite.

AOL, meanwhile, is putting the finishing touches on its next-generation AIM client due this winter. Currently dubbed Triton, the new software will introduce a number of changes to the service including tabbed messaging windows and full chat logging.

Yahoo recently introduced version 7 of its Yahoo! Messenger client that focuses on PC-to-PC calling and directly challenges newcomer Skype. Google's entry into the market could further put pressure on Skype, which has seen its user base soar over the last year.

"This is the worst possible news for someone like Skype, because now they will up against not two but three giants who want to offer a pale-version of Skype," noted tech pundit Om Malik.

Google has had an IM client for over a year now. It came with Picasa when they bought that. It's called "Hello." It's very basic, but it works for the use it was intended.

Google never intended to market *that* client, hence why so few folks have heard of it.

If they *do* make a client, it will likely be based off of this since most of the groundwork is already laid, and *not* jabber. It is very likely the Jabber server is for internal use only.

Never said they wouldn't produce plugins to make *their* IM client work with other networks. Just that they would not let other clients use their network.

Then again, I really don't see them doing that either. If they were to make an IM (and I'm not falling for this one), it'd blow the rest so far out of the water they wouldn't have to worry about it.

Search-Engine - Revolutionary/Innovative. Changed the way Search engines were viewed net-wide. Instant success for Google.

E-mail - Revolutionary/Innovative. Changed the way Many people across the net uses email (labels, never deleting again, fast, etc). Instant success for Google, even though it is *still* in beta and is not yet even available to the public at large without invite.

IM? You honestly think they'd skimp on it?

Yep.

GoOS. Web-based, minus the BSD kernel that kicks your NIC into gear. All of your Apps and documents\pics\music\etc. will be online and accesible from any PC in the world.

System crashed? No biggie.. reboot, your data's online, so it's all good.

But don't worry, they're not going to make you switch from MS cold-turkey. They're giving you the Google Desktop first. The next version will replace the Windows(tm) desktop entirely. Thus, when GoOS finally arrives, the transition will be minimal. They'll just replace the underlying bloat from MS, you'll hardly notice a difference.

Just imagine the possibilities:

Error codes? No way...we'll take you directly to a web-page chock-full of solutions to your problems! (Even the personal ones...W3 g07 b1g 0n35!)

Lost your Data? Not here...We've got it all. Backed up in triplicate, even. Just log back in from anywhere and there it is. (Of course, we'll never look at it.)

Tired of Bubble-Buttons and lame transparent title-bars? No problem, Google's boring (I mean clean)interface will replace all that CPU-eating garbage.

Won't life be better when it's not Your(tm) Life, but a GoLife(tm)?
