Internet TV Startup Joost Raises $45m

Joost, the Internet TV startup founded by Skype and Kazaa creators Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, has raised $45 million from a group of five investors that includes CBS and Viacom. The service has been in private beta for months, and recently opened to a broader audience.

Thus far, Joost's largest problem has been the quality of television content viewers could receive. The new funding news comes after both CBS and Viacom announced plans to make their content available on the service. Joost relies on P2P technology to save bandwidth costs, as each viewer transmits video data to other users as well.

Am I the only one who was NOT impressed with Joost? Joost advertises itself as "Internet TV", which to me means being able to receive live broadcasts online from different stations around the world, not pre-recorded programs. It's a cool program, it's great eye candy, but you are limited to watching pre-recorded shows... show me actual, live, streamed TV from stations around the world, THEN I'll be impressed... but pre-recorded stuff? You can get a lot of that stuff already on YouTube. It's cool but I'm just not impressed. They've built up SO much hype with having to get invites from others... but the product, to me, doesn't live up to the hype... not even close.

I'm really really impressed. the quality of this really blows youtube away. I experienced no problems of lag or anything. Awesome! TV on the computer is here!
