Invite-only Windows 7 beta testers get their free copies after all

By Tim Conneally | Published July 30, 2009, 3:35 PM

Microsoft's support for a public "eager to begin using Windows 7" has now extended to Technical beta testers, who will be getting a free full version of the operating system. Earlier this month, word got out that Windows 7 tech beta testers would actually not be receiving a free copy of Windows 7 as testers of Vista did, which elicited the expected amount of criticism.

However, official Windows blogger Brandon LeBlanc, who made that announcement announced today that he was wrong, and that members of the invitation only Windows 7 Technical Beta program will be able to download free English language copies of Windows 7 Ultimate on August 6, or have a boxed copy shipped on October 22, the day it is released in stores.

This offer does not involve those who tested the Windows 7 public beta and release candidate versions, and instructions and forms for obtaining the free copy of the OS will be put up on Microsoft Connect on Monday, August 3.

"and i must say i think that the RC ran better"

TBH, I think the Beta ran even better. Very disappointing.

Still a far sight better than Vista, but....the gap is narrowing.

as with most windows installs you can really widen the gap once you get it installed anyhow, best thing about 7 is that its faster than vista and less heavy to start with

i believe i got my ultimate install down to 5GB, now that i was proud of lol, i can't get Vista below say 11GB!

The install?

Can't find it right now, but I posted the Virtual Machine disk sizes a while ago (XP, Vista, Ubuntu and Win7) and While Vista was high, I don't recall it being anywhere near 11GB....

I'll have to google for that..

Found it!

8.5GB...though this is just after install/updates. Installing Office would go well over your 11GB no doubt. ;)

So now Windows 7 public beta testers join Vista Ultimate users in getting ripped-off? Thank you MS for showing us the finger after our hard work of discovering bugs and spending our time & energy on improving the OS. If only some people are getting rewarded for beta testing and the rest shown the finger simply because that's a larger audience on which they'll lose sales, that's totally unfair.

Not getting something you've made up your mind you are entitled to != getting ripped off. No-one ever said you'd get anything for doing it.

Amen PC_Tool. I wholeheartedly agree. Just because you "tested" something does not mean you are entitled to something for free. This is a problem with the entitled generation.

What about all the Vista Ultimate users the got screwed! Hey Microsoft wake up....

How did we get screwed? I knew what I was buying when I bought ultimate, and I do enjoy it thoroughly. If you bought it for the "Ultimate extras" then you were indeed foolish. I bought it for other reasons.

"If you bought it for the "Ultimate extras" then you were indeed foolish. "

...

Foolish? To expect Microsoft to actually follow through with their promise?

IMO, they should have opened that up shortly after the bad press about the OS began to all versions of the OS and...I dunno...maybe actually done something with it. Who knows...might have helped.

I am not saying its foolish to expect microsoft to come through with that, I am saying that buying the OS for that sole purpose, just for the "extras", is foolish. I wholeheartedly expected microsoft to utilize the extras program a bit more but alas, here we are.

It definitely sucked.

*shrug*

I bought it because I wanted "it all"... and was greatly disappointed by the extras. So much so I regretted buying it and believed Home Premium would have been a better choice.

...I suppose if that qualifies as "Foolish", so be it.

That is the reason I bought it. I bought it because I actually use bitlocker and need some of the items from business edition such as domain join capability. Buying it just for the promise of "extras" is foolish in my opinion.
