Is Sony finally getting its PlayStation 3 act together?
By Jacqueline Emigh | Published November 21, 2007, 3:48 PM
Will last month's PS3 price cuts and this week's set of additional announcements help Sony's Playstation gaming platform to hold its own against Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Wii? The verdicts from analysts are mixed.
"I see the PS3 as running head-to-head with the Xbox [360] this holiday season in terms of units sold," said Michael Cai, a gaming analyst with Parks Associates. "What happened this week will add to the momentum that's already gotten started."
On the other hand, some analysts see too much pre-existing momentum in the other direction.
"The PS3 is still about the most expensive game console out there, thanks largely to its support for Blu-ray," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Associates. "For the PS3 to be priced competitively, Sony would need to get down to the sub-$300 delta. But even that wouldn't be enough to make the PS3 really succeed in the console market."
The last month has brought a bewildering array of announcements from Sony, the obvious effect of which has been to keep the company in the news, but whose intended effect seems to be to make both developers and users aware that it's no longer treating its competition so lightly.
It all began when the company quietly sold its Cell BE chip fab to Toshiba, and then a few weeks later when Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer proclaimed the whole Blu-ray/HD DVD format battle -- which the PS3 was originally intended to make short order of -- a stalemate.
Then on October 18, Sony reduced prices on the high-end 80 GB PS3 from $599 to $499, a maneuver which does appear to have helped bolster sales, despite earlier indications. PS3 sales then shot from a previous average of 30,000 to 40,000 units per week to 75,000 units during the week of October 29, according to Sony officials, who attributed the improvement to that sales cut along with the rollout of a 40 GB model for $399 on November 2. For the week ending November 11, Sony's sales for all consoles topped 100,000 units, officials said.
According to some industry analysts, Sony is simply grasping at more and more straws, in a desparate attempt to gain market share against Microsoft's industry-leading Xbox 360 console. But others argue that this week's news represents a set of solid next steps for building on a foundation paved by last month's price cut.
Rob Enderle predicts that Sony's gaming console will remain in the number three position industry-wide -- behind both the Xbox and Nintendo's Wii -- despite Sony's announcement on Monday of new development tools and price reductions on its existing SDK, and the opening up on Tuesday of PlayStation Store to PC downloads by PSP users.
But the recent string of positive sales numbers prompts Michael Cai to disagree wholeheartedly with Enderle about PlayStation's future.
"The worst time has passed. Now, Sony is going to do better. Demand for the PS3 is picking up. That should be true in Japan as well as in Europe and the US," said Cai. He called on Sony to drive development of more games for its platform, saying, "The PS3 needs better content."
Unlike Enderle, Cai doesn't regard Nintendo's Wii as belonging in the same product category as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. "The Wii is in its own league, with its own demographics. It draws on the untapped interest of non-traditional gamers, especially with the games involving physical motion," Cai elaborated.
In Enderle's opinion, though, Sony's move to cut the price of its SDK in half is mainly an effort to keep developers from drifting away to competing gaming platforms. "Sony's been bleeding developers," he maintained.
But Enderle suggested that these attempts are likely to be futile unless Sony manages to stick close to the sales figures of its competitors. The main challenge for sales, he said, is that the PS3 lacks either the gaming catalog of the Xbox 360 or the "family features" of the Wii.
Both analysts, however, agree that the PS3 and 360 consoles are quite different animals than recently rolled out PC gaming platforms such as Dell's XPS One system and Hewlett-Packard's Blackbird 002, which cost a lot more than consoles and tend to run different types of games.
"But the PC platforms are much easier to upgrade," Cai observed. "It doesn't take long for a game console to get outdated."
[CORRECTION: Parks Associates' Michael Cai wrote in to say he may have been misquoted in this story earlier: Specifically, he said that maximum PS3 video resolution does not exceed that of Xbox 360, which is accurate. We apologize to Michael and have corrected the story above.]
i just wanted to say im really enjoying my 360 halo experience on the big screen and once i figure out why the sony surround sound system i bought to run the hdmi through is sabotaging my game play and dvd playback with 5-10 second black screen hickups, i'll be loving it even more.
For reference, the wireless controllers for the 360 give my hands cramps and one of them was randomly shutting off when vibration happened, and another wont allow me to use my headset to talk. GET IT TOGETHER MICROSOFT! STOP SHIPPING BROKEN PRODUCT! I hate em both, but i do love the games, and since ms has em, that's where i sit. if sony had all the games, it might have been a different story.

To be fair, they received more 360's than Wii's and PS3's combined - but I'd say the game list for PS3 has gotten compelling enough to drive sales - rather than the hardware having to be compelling to drive early adopters.

Despire having a year's less time in the hands of developers, multi-platform games are now starting to emerge, that look better on the PS3 hardware, COD4 for example, first party titles like Ratchet & Clank, Unchartered Drakes Fortune, as showing stuff that simply can't be done on the other consoles.
The list of PS3 exclusives is looking sweet for the next 6 months. Unreal Tournement 3, Haze, MGS4, Final Fantasy, The Agency.
Even the much delayed GTA IV, is supposed to be running far better on the Playstation hardware, thanks to Blu-ray and standard HDD.

What about the PSN? A half assed attempt at on online gaming experience that people would rather pay MS for the privilege as opposed to a bad free service?
And lastly, a bad selection of games that studios admit the console is a pain to program for?
You mean those features? The PS3 is a joke compared to the 360, but you would only know that if you owned them both.

Let's be fair here...
The 360 was every bit as rushed as the PS3, as is evidenced by the hardware failures. We'll see how Sony fares in comparison, now that their library has started to give people a reason to play on a more regular basis.
Developers still say that creating games for the PS3 is a b****, and tend to develop for the 360 first...porting to the PS3 later into the life cycle (EA and their sports games are a prime example of this).
Ratchet and Clank does look great, but Drake's Fortune suffers from a serious case of the jaggies (and trust me...every console is capable of this).
The next 6 months don't mean a damn thing, until they come to pass. I didn't buy my console for its potential gaming experience...I bought them to play NOW. (BTW...there was a news item recently that Square Enix halted development on the 'white engine', and that this may delay FF13 even longer).
Both Sony and MS made some big mistakes this generation. It's nice to see that each of them is, at least, taking steps to correct them.

I Fail to see what people cry about, Sony have sold over 6 million PS3's in a year, about the same as Microsoft did with the 360. The obvious difference of course, is Microsoft had the market themselves in their first year.
As for games, the first year on 360 was also pretty dire, and I actually think the PS3 had better games than 360 had in it's first year (which only actually stepped up a gear, when Gears was released, something which the system still has yet to better).
Score: 0
Again, explain to me how Sony is catching up to Nintendo and Microsoft when the Wii and Xbox360 both outsell the PS3 month after month. I even doubt Sony sold 6 million units. It's probably closer to 5 million. Not much to brag about. The Dreamcast sold some 7 million units before Sega decided to pull out of the hardware business. Now I'm not suggesting Sony is going to pull out of the console hardware sector. We all know they're willing to bleed a few billion more in losses, if that's what it takes to get the PS3 back on track. But to assume that the PS3 is going to be a serious competitor to either the Wii or the Xbox360 any time soon is just idiotic.

The dollar is near worthless? You obviously don't understand foreign exchange. The dollar flexes and contracts according to the desires of the banking industry. When the dollar is "weak" it's because exporters want a boost and the administration wants to create jobs. When it bounces back, the analysts complain about the trade deficits and the cost of the American wage.
Dude, you need to seriously reconsider dropping your uneducated opinion around like that. People are arguing with you here because you constantly spew BS on this forum.
The PS3 "better" in Europe and Japan, but they don't spend nearly as much on gaming entertainment as we do. This means our market defines the gaming industry. We set the pace.

Recently I noticed this ad has been updated to say "Starting at $399" at the end. Yeah, like that's gonna move more units.
"The worst time has passed. Now, Sony is going to do better. Demand for the PS3 is picking up. That should be true in Japan as well as in Europe and the US,"
Say what? More like.. the guys who could afford the PS3 in the first place already bought one. The others who couldn't afford it, bought an Xbox360 instead. The rest, the real cheap skates and low income people, bought a Wii.
"Cai doesn't regard Nintendo's Wii as belonging in the same product category as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."
I smell a Sony shill. Only a hardcore Sony shill would make such a statement. Using the same logic, we could argue that the PS3 doesn't belong in the same product category as the Xbox 360 either. It's for yuppies and rich kids with money to throw out the window. Seriously, no matter how you look at it, a gaming console should NOT cost $500 and up. I remember back when I got my SNES for Christmas, it was $189 and came with Super Mario World. Now THAT was a good deal. The average kid wants a cheap gaming system with good games, not a super computer that costs his parents a whole week's pay.

Enderle is a Microsoft shill. This is a well known fact in the investor community. It is why no one takes him seriously. He has been saying that Apple is dead for 6 years now.
Dial back his comments about 50% and they would be close - but his hyperbole makes him useless and that is why he is not employed/self-employed.

"But the PC platforms are much easier to upgrade," Cai observed. "It doesn't take long for a game console to get outdated."
wrong!! PC's get outdated yearly!! I JUST built a PC in march played all my games and newer games PERFECT....then, crysis, gears of war, quakewars, etc. come out in october/november and Bamm!!! I have to buy a new mobo inorder to have dx10!!
so i bought a ps3 last night after 5 years of PC gaming :-( ps3 will play great games for the next few years and i dont have to update anything!!!

If you bought in March this year then your story is bulls***, or you didn't buy a gaming machine originally. If you're talking March 2006... maybe. Even then, you could still play all the current games on your 7900 - I know I am (COD4 runs in the 40-50fps range at 1600x1200). Sure I don't have DX10, but DX10 isn't much better anyway (yet). It's also bulls*** you need a new motherboard - anything purchased in March this year or last would be PCI-E, so you just need a new graphics card.
But hey, if you bought a PS3 last year, it still wouldn't be playing DX10. And won't. Ever.
So how about you get your facts straight next time? Or was it March 2005? :p

Good story. This is what I'm talking about. This is in no way a positive spin story or a bash story for Sony. It's facts, annalist’s opinions, and predictions from both sides. Some say its too late, some say its just getting started. It’s neutral.
Now why can't other "journalists" do this?

In the end I'm sure the PS3 will hold up to it's name. All it needs is good, exclusive content, which is on the way.
Sony's PS3 price reductions have come at a cost. The new hardware lacks backwards compatibility as well as the ability to play Super Audio CDs. Most people might not care about these, but I'm glad I purchased my 60GB model a while back.

It's highly unlikely you'll see any exclusives that would be very big. Unless Sony pays you a boatload of money to make the game exclusive, it just makes no business sense to put out an exclusive based on how small Sony's market share is.

I can see Sony keeping up in the end, but that wont be until next year when their big hit exclusives are released. I just hope I can still find a 60 gig PS3, otherwise I think I'm completely out with Sony for this generation.

For the record, the PS3 has outsold the Wii for exactly 2 weeks in a row (with the 40gb helping the cause).
From ripten.com (via ps3scene.com):
PS3: 53,000
