Just the facts, please: Apple announces a Mac notebook event

By Tim Conneally, BetaNews

October 9, 2008, 8:30 PM

Apple and wildly speculative rumors about the company are practically inseparable. Today, the company emailed invitations to an October 14 event in its hometown of Cupertino, CA.

As usual, it needs to say very little to get the public talking a lot. The ad shows the ubiquitous, titanium aluminum notebook lid with the glowing white Apple trademark and the epigraph: "The spotlight turns to notebooks."

Unlike the iPod refresh that took place in September, the company's pattern of updating its line of notebooks has been a little less regular. Typically, however, it is an annual occurrence, with functionality upgrades (such as those made to the CPU) taking place with no overt regularity.

I see you all finally stopped taking the bait from our resident Apple dork who hasn't got a piece of a** since the last time his finger poked through the toilet paper.

Considering some of the articles on Apple's new manufacturing process alluding to laser/water jet on billet/brick aluminum, it's a bit strange to say the new notebooks will be titanium, which Apple hasn't used since the end of the PowerPC PowerBook models. Nevertheless, it will be exciting to see the engineering on the new models afforded to them by a change in manufacturing technology.

Just because you can't afford one does not mean you should be critical. Just save up. I'm sure one of these years you'll finally be able to get a beloved Mac.

I can afford one, still thinking the same.
The design is awesome, OS X is great but the hardware is overpriced.

OK. As a reply to some of the other post, perhaps the author of this story was referring to "titanium" as the color and not the material it is made of. Although for what a Macbook costs it should be made of titanium. And as for dvferret's comment, I agree...this is a pointless story.

Now, before any of you Mac lovers start bashing me for the comment I made about the cost of a Mac, I own a 17" Macbook Pro and I love it. But come on....for the $3600 price tag I could have bought three Windows based laptops that would have been just as good.

P.S. Vista sucks... no matter what flavor.

Vista x64 is a treat, 32 bit is junk!
As an aside, love my cake cutter, and running Vista x64 Business on the bootcamp partition, works very well indeed.
Got to give Apple credit for the quality of their driver disk, in that those not already included in the aforementioned Vista, were covered in theirs, saved much time & grief.
Running several notebooks, 2 with XP Pro, one of which came with Vista as a downgrade option.
The others that came with Vista preinstalled (one of which is a Dell XPS M1530), have since purchased academic upgrade disks & then paid the price of postage (AUD16.40) for x64 disks from MSFT.
As far as the MBA goes, I look upon it as training wheels (hey Taxman subsidises it).

Not to worry, just buy the new one like I am. My MacBook is less than one year old and I will definitely get this new titanium MacBook and a new iMac. I wish I could give my whole paycheck to Apple.

It's worth noting that, currently, only the MacBook Pros are aluminum. (Let's pretend the article didn't say "titanium," which Apple has not used in quite a while.) The regular MacBooks are currently made of white or black plastic, but this is widely expected to change with the refresh, and this invitation *may* confirm this, as the notebook appears to be the 13-in form factor of the current MacBooks.

Plus, the MacBooks have gone longer than average without an update, so this should be quite exciting when they finally come. :)

No it's not pointless. Anything Apple does should be on the front page of any news outlet. Apple is the greatest company on earth that is led by the greatest CEO on earth. If the great and wise Steve Jobs sneezes I want to know about it!

You don't understand. It's like the Matrix, I took the red pill, woke up and was no longer under the control of the machines (Microsoft). :)

SGD, you've got to visit your nearest Apple store and take the red pill by switching. Give it 3 days and a massive light will go off in your head which means you are no longer under the control of the machines, Microsoft.

Woohoo, you will be free!!!
