MTV Launches 24-Hour Online Channel

MTV earlier this week re-launched its college channel MTV Uber (mtvU), making it the first channel from the network to be available in its entirety online. Previously, mtvU was only available on the cable systems of about 730 college campuses.

The channel will feature music videos plus short-form series and other content, as well as student-produced material. MTV said it made the change based on "overwhelming student demand."

Uber is not MTV's first foray into the world of online programming. The company launched Overdrive, an on-demand online version of its broadcast network channels, back in April of this year.

"With today's announcement, we are handing over an entire channel online to college students and everyone who wants new music," said Stephen Friedman, GM, mtvU.

MTV has also partnered with Cisco Systems to give cash prizes of $25,000 to those who come up with novel ideas on how to use broadband technology, all of which would then be exclusively released on the online network.

The channel is now available from the MTV Uber Web site.
