Microsoft to Debut Zune 2 on Tuesday
By Ed Oswald | Published October 1, 2007, 12:30 PM
Microsoft will hold a event on Tuesday in Redmond to herald the second generation of Zune music players, BetaNews has learned.
According to sources close to the situation, both Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Design and Development chief J Allard will be on hand for the event. The main part of the announcement will center around the players, which will include the first flash memory based Zunes.
Entering the flash-based device market is very important for Microsoft, as the category is by far the most popular. While the Zune has managed to grab a 10 percent share of the HDD player segment, overall that has amounted to about a 3 percent share of the market in general.
Not much change in the Zune's design will accompany the new HDD players, which would look similar but thinner. The flash based players will measure 3-inches by 1.25-inches and are said to look much like the iPod nano. The smaller Zunes will be video capable, and are rumored to include Wi-Fi and higher storage than competing products.
About 2.4 million next-generation Zunes will be manufactured during the 2007 holiday season, according to reports. Two-thirds of these players are expected to be flash-based, showing that Microsoft is indeed aware of the much higher popularity of flash players, which are cheaper.
The new players are expected to be available beginning in November. The company is also expected to give details at the event of a new Zune community site that will launch in beta, and Microsoft's own line of first party accessories, although not many details are currently available.
Gates and Allard will likely touch on the company's long term commitment to the platform. While many analysts have considered the Zune a flop so far -- the company is only selling 1 Zune for every 25 or so iPods sold -- Microsoft is determined to make its mark in the industry.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the news.
yeah....1 zune for every 25 i-pod sold...pretty close..is the zune 2 80 GB gonna be better than the 30GB except its memory..Is it worth buying the 80GB (Iwant it though)....If u guys are good sales (entreprenuers) people..hen convince me to get one..or at least tell me some good stuff about the zune 2 80GB...thanks Bill and J allard

The best part about WMA Pro is 7.1 multichannel support, 24-bit 96 KHz sound and dynamic range compression. And although AAC/HE-AAC is an open standard, its implementation varies by vendors, such a major company like Apple doesn't support AAC+ and AAC+ multichannel encoders are few. It is definitely not a "polished turd" compared to WMA if you've really listened to music in the format.

|[The best part about WMA Pro is 7.1 multichannel support, 24-bit 96 KHz sound and dynamic range compression.]
Since the Zune is mostly used for audio playback (c'mon, you're not going to hookup your zune as a source for your HDTV!) over headphones, what good does 7.1 channel support give you (oh, yeah, those new Bose 7.1 headphones - pht!)?
As for 96 KHz 24-bit sound, that might sound good, but you want to keep your sampling rate the same as your source, so 44.1 KHz 16-bit is all you need.
In summary, WMA-Pro is a nice spec, but it makes no difference on a Zune. Since Zune comes in brown, I think the "polish turd" reference is fitting, though I don't know why the folks in Warsaw end up the brunt of a Microsoft joke.

|What a joke! I have never seen so much BS in all my time online. Which started in the 2400 baud world. We all need Microsoft, as we all need Apple. We as in computer/internet people. The internet would never be what it is today without either of those companies. And I remeber Bill Gates saying what he wanted for the world when it came to PC's many years ago. And I see his vision coming to life. He said about having people join together online for fun, gaming and just talking. As you are all doing now. He said about computer controlled homes, cars, planes, everyday items and the home PC (media center). All long before it happened. And he had the vision. Said it in plain old english way back when. Whats more is that fact that he has seen to it that MS passes along more then 500 million in help every year to the needy. Bet you never hear about that. And they do not have to do this, so don't go down the, "It costs them nothing." road. It does, $500 million plus per year. And they do not use that point to sell you any of the products they have as others with red colored things might do. They just do it!
I know Steve Jobs did not follow this idea as Bill did and that helped them break apart. So I suggest that we need both Microsoft and Apple. Give it up about this is better or worse.(BS talk) I go with what i think is best for me at the time. And I may change my mind at any time because I can. That is what the internet is all about. The internet helps us all to be informed, as you all know. I know about the other OS's I did not mention. Tough! How long do you want this comment. Simple example, IPhone users that bought right away are getting dumped every time they turn around with a newer better cheaper version. Each of which is not the same size as the one before. Just as the IPods are doing. And I will go on to say that Zune ver.1 will be upgradable as microsoft has done in the past for thier products. Ver 2 is to be thinner with what is needed to naturally make it better. But there are not more than one size in general (shuffle/nano/classic/touch) Not to leave out the IPhone/ITV! Now there is another topic! Zune looks much simpler to me at this time. And given MS's track record they have me leaning towards them. Yes my 360 died and got sent in. But I had no problems at all. Cost me nothing other than some time without it and got everything for free with some extras to say sorry. I wait to see the day that another manufactures even comes close tothe service and help I got from MS. I am sure MS did not do this on purpose. So some things happen and we all move on. Even with all this happening Halo 3 has not only broke all the entertainment records but has at this time doubled the 360 sales! Who would have thought!!! And I have never seen Halo 3 below 650,000 members yet! And that is a FACT. Maybe I am on at only good times??? Never had screen lag or conection problems. Great work Bungie!(you old MAC game programers you)Yes, Bungie made great games very simular to Halo for the MAC only, way back when.
Don't go there, as an example, Steve dropped the price of new IPhones by $200.00. Then he found out how pissed everyone was that bought right away and offered a $100.00 spending spree. Great! Still out a 'C' note for buying early! And you can not upgrade your IPod or spend your money anywhere but at Istore, other than to download something which cost more money. What a scheme!
All said and done I am looking into a zune and/or a IPod NANO for my daughter. I will look over the facts as best I can and do what I think is right. As you all should do! FACTS, not what you say in this site. What BS!!!
PS I have a SONY NetMan. Never really did anything for me. Wasted a bit of change on that. And I always buy creative sound cards for my PC's and my customers.
