Microsoft Launches Video Podcast

Looking to expand on the success of its Channel 9 developer site, Microsoft on Monday rolled out a new community called 10. Each day, On10.net will host a video highlighting new technologies and the people behind them. Unlike Channel 9, however, the site will not only cover Microsoft.

The first video features a tour of KEXP 90.3, an independent radio station that streams live over the Internet. Users of 10 can comment on the videos as they are watching them, and to reach the broadest visitor base the site supports multiple formats including QuickTime.

"In building 10 we paid close attention to the finer details like being able to participate in the conversations while watching a video or little things like pausing the player when you want to sign in to the site. It is a very asynchronous experience," says 10 developer Jeff Sandquist.

With 10, Microsoft is taking an informal approach to target a more-youthful Internet generation. While Channel 9 videos were largely about geeks and for geeks, 10 brings to the table an edgier approach with screen-savvy hosts from G4 TV. The site's design reflects that approach.

Jupiter Research senior analyst Joe Wilcox notes that while 10 has "a clear marketing slant," it does not favor Microsoft's products. "The videos are available to download in iPod, PSP and Windows Media formats. The Website is clear and uncluttered. Jeff and his team have done a commendable job," Wilcox says.

At the end of each week, the videos will be compiled into a full-length feature with added extras. Blogs written by both Microsoft employees and community members will also play a central role in 10.

"Our dream is to create a place for those people who want to use technology to change the world," says Sandquist.
