Microsoft Responds to 'Ultimate Extras' Complaints

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

With a rather lackluster list of the so-called "Ultimate Extras," Microsoft took the step of assuring its user base that it still remained committed to the idea on Monday.

Since Vista's launch in January 2007, only four extras have been released, including Windows Hold'Em, 16 language packs for the Windows multi-language UI, Secure Online Key Backuip, and Windows BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool - not exactly exciting additions to Vista.

Those extras were released just days after the consumer launch of the product. Since then, not a single Ultimate Extra has been released except for a beta preview of "DreamScene," leading some to believe that Microsoft was attempting to back away from its initial promise.

One of the people asking that question was Windows enthusiast Long Zheng, who wrote in a blog post June 14 about the lack of Windows Ultimate Extras.

"We apologize for taking so long to provide a status update to customers," Vista Ultimate Director Barry Goffe said. "Our goal is to provide the highest-quality, most secure and reliable offerings, and as a result we are continuing our work on these offerings."

In a blog post complete with Microsoft's apology for its silence, Goffe repeatedly stressed that delays had to do with ensuring product quality. Two extras, Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs, would be released by the end of the summer, he added.

Until then, don't look for any other Extras news, as Microsoft does not plan to identify them or even speak about release dates until after DreamScene and the language packs are released to the public.

"We plan to ship a collection of additional Windows Ultimate Extras over the next couple years that we are confident will delight our passionate Windows Vista Ultimate customers," Goffe said.

Not everybody is happy with Microsoft's response to user complaints over the lack of extras. "This post is nothing but cover-your-[expletive] PR doublespeak," Robert McLaws wrote for Windows-now.com. "Personally, I think the Extras team was disbanded, and only reconvened after people like Long stirred up enough of the hornets to force MS back into action."

God, could Microsoft suck any worse? Seriously. Toolie must be the only one who bought Ultimate. Just pirate your own copy watch the Microsoft defenders squirm.

Once again, it pays to join their beta programs. I got my license of Ultimate for free at the close of the program (RTM), as did most others. I wouldn't have purchased it on my own otherwise.

Thanks for a good laugh. I knew right from the beginning that the Ultimate version was just there to rip off all the sad losers with minority complex who felt they need it as some sort of virtual p**** enlargement so they at least have a single thing they can brag about.
No surprise that they don't get anything worth the money, and that the Extras are scarce and completely worthless (just like Vista itself).

Now that Microsoft is going into the PC business, let's all go out and buy one. Also, make sure it has Ultimate installed. I'm still contemplating taking up knitting. Now if I can only find a nice, little asylum that will take me.

Thank goodness I bought an OEM copy. At least it's only $189 that collecting dust on my shelf instead of $399. Unbelievable.

I'm sure some people did, since OEM Vista activation is tied to the motherboard.

OEM vista activation, if u build a NEW PC call MS tell them u had MOBO failiare ...easy, but i'm sure if i build new PC w/ my oem ultimate it wont even give me a prob..

they wont know u just built a new PC and i think its every 60days they clear there logs on activation.

Well, I'm rather ashamed to admit that I was one of the ones who purchased Vista Ultimate Edition (retail upgrade, but still)...

To top that off, it was the "Signature Edition"... number 21242/25000 reporting for duty, sir! :)

It's actually the first version of Windows that I've ever purchased, if truth be known, as I didn't want the hassle of bypassing yet another barrage of activation countermeasures.

However, adding a couple of hard drives, doubling the amount of RAM, and upgrading the BIOS on my motherboard awoke the reactivation beast from it's slumber. I'm back to XP Pro x64, and haven't looked back (EDIT: err, forward?).

You mean totally changing the hardware makeup of the computer made windows think it was a different computer?

No...I cannot be...

/sarcasm

Call MS. A retail upgrade can be used on your system just fine. It'll take 5 minutes. I had virtually the same issue with my OEM edition.

...people like Long stirred up enough of the hornets to force MS back into action.

Action? 2 more by the end of Summer?

There should be at least one release every quarter. Anything less and people start to forget why they spent the extra dough on Ultimate to begin with.

I didn't buy Ultimate *just* for the extras, but it was nice to think (for a while at least) that it would just keep getting better. Now it's just Home Premium with a few add-ons I really couldn't care any less about and little hope for the "bright future" I had been led to expect.

Of course, they already have my money, so what do they care, right? Should have seen that one coming a mile away.

Hopefully this will bury the sales of U.E. and maybe wake them up.

Your sentiments mirror my own, bud. You beat me to it.

EDIT: Actually, those 2 don't really count in my opinion. More language packs? I would think that is something that should be available for every version... and the final release of DreamScene? C'mon Microsoft, at least release some halfway decent video loops for the beta version that's already available, instead of the poorly edited pack that was released.

Factor in the inflated cost of a Mac and you end up worse off than just buying Vista.

But since you're quoting Steve Jobs, I can see where your wagon rides.

It's amazing that people still try and throw around that "price premium" garbage. I'll take an 8-core machine that can run Mac OSX and XP/Vista for about $4000.

$4000 for your 8-core machine that has video hardware from 2004 and e-machine hard drives.

Yeah, where can I sign up?

What's the point of Apple design if the computer is better off as a closet server than an AV workstation?

There's your price premium.

I personally don't believe any laptop should come with integrated graphics. That includes both PC/Mac. I don't like the corners Apple cuts in their Mac hardware for the prices they charge...

Such as an 8 Core Mac Pro with horrible graphic hardware options and 7200 RPM drives.

What is that, a joke?

Right after you complete operation:troll

All those apps have already had a MS version since XP granted they aren't perfect but they are still there

WMP
Windows Movie Player
a very poor version of a photo viewer which got better in vista because of their paid software basically being integrated into vista
No garage band alternative but most musicians don't use garage band to compose full songs
its usually logic or cubase and if your on a pc its cubase or sonar.

PLus if MS were to include more professional software into Vista they would have been seen as anti-competitive.

SO they are damned if they do and damned if they don't
