Microsoft Reveals Xbox 360 Lineup

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

Microsoft began a full-court press to promote its upcoming Xbox 360 game console by making several major announcements at a press event in Amsterdam Tuesday. Also confirmed were several titles that will be made available when the new Xbox becomes available next month.

The company expects some 20 titles to be ready when the console launches, with up to 200 more currently in development. In comparison, the original Xbox only had about a half-dozen titles available at launch.

Some of the games available from Rare, a Microsoft subsidiary, include 'Kameo: Elements of Power,' 'Perfect Dark Zero,' and 'Project Gotham Racing 3.'

Electronic Arts also threw its support behind the Xbox 360, with EA vice president Gerhard Florin saying "the combined power of Xbox 360 and innovation from EA in graphics, animation and game play means consumers will have unprecedented levels of interaction and rich connection with the games they play."

EA Xbox 360 titles will include 'FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup,' as well as 'NBA Live' and 'Madden NFL.'

Franchise titles will also make their debut on Xbox 360, including a Superman video game, 'Call of Duty 2,' 'Castle Wolfenstein,' and 'Quake 4.'

"The biggest and the best names in publishing are committed to the success of Xbox 360, and looking at the titles we have announced tonight we are very excited," Microsoft's vice president of Xbox marketing Peter Moore said in a statement.

"From exclusive titles to debuting the next installment of some of the world’s best-loved franchises, Xbox 360 will redefine gaming and entertainment," he continued. "The high-definition era of gaming starts now.”

Microsoft's Xbox 360 will go on sale for $299 USD for a basic system on November 22. A model with a hard drive that gives users the capability to download older Xbox games would retail for $399 USD.

Take Gates out of your bung hole. I want more RPGs. You take a www.gamefly.com search of all RPG games for the XBOX and it come up with <25 for the life of the XBOX. WOW thats so few that i didnt even know they made a RPG ever for the XBOX. I was almost wrong. PS3 is going to be out-dated by the time it releases next fall 2006 in the USA. Guess I'll have to settle with taking it in the A$$ from Bill Gates again. We'll see how many crappy 1st person shooters XBOX 360 show and the fraction of RPGs available for it. WOHOO, 1 game FF11 thats almost 4 years old now for the XBOX360... WOW!

This is going to badly erode Sony's console market share and tolls the death knell of their early advantage in that market.

If I were Sony, I'd be seriously afraid. MS wants this market, has no love for Sony (questionable dealings by that company in the past vis a vis ever-changing specifications for proprietary PC hardware, among other things) and has the savvy and muscle to do them serious damage. They are also as tenacious as a pitbull in heat and aren't afraid to give away their console to get market share, knowing that they'll easily make it back and then some with game sales and the online subscription model later.

Add having serious developer support sewn up and you get a recipe for Sony disaster. The relatively lacklustre showing of the PSP was a harbinger of things to come.

From a technical perspective (which definitely matters because it defines the ability of a console to provide an immersive game experience), XBox easily trumped PS2 in the video and audio departments. XBox 360 is the knockout punch.

Wow... I'm amazed at the in depth reasoning you both used in your arguments.

Let the fanboy flamewars begin...

As for me, I'll play any system, as long as the games are there. Why limit myself by choosing a side? I've never cared/paid too much attention to the difference in specs as far as systems are concerned. If the gameplay is there, that's what you'll see sitting in my entertainment system. Currently I have a PS2, XBox, GameCube, and N64 all sitting comfortably in the same cabinet. And guess what... they get along great! They never seem to start arguing and bashing each other.

...too bad people can't take that aspect from inanimate objects...

(this post is in no way trying to attack any of the posters above it, it is just an observation of similar past discussions)

well the compelling arguments I've heard is because PS3 have chosen the non-wanted blue-ray format for their media whereas the xbox 360 have something which can still be used. (I forgot what the difference were, but I'm sure it can be yahooed for)

Blueray holds more. Also, remember, the XBOX 360 is coming with DVD9, which is way less than HDDVD, and far more less than BlueRay

...yeah... because I don't know how many times I've wanted to use my Playstation discs for things other than playing games on my Playstation...

Shame on video game producers for using media recognized only on their respective systems.
