Microsoft: 'We misjudged demand' for Xbox 360

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

February 14, 2008, 11:14 AM

Microsoft admitted Wednesday that it sales for its flagship Xbox 360 game console were in fact so strong that it hasn't been able to maintain inventory levels.

Redmond may be playing the expectations game as NPD data listing monthly console sales is due shortly, and may show some weakness due to these supply problems. Microsoft's game marketing chief Jeff Bell said it could have an impact on its sales.

"We're literally out of stock in many stores," Bell told Reuters. January and February numbers are expected to be affected most, but the company is ramping up production and will likely be able to meet demand by spring.

In December, Microsoft sold some 1.26 million units, one of its best months ever. The surge in sales allowed it to keep pace with Nintendo's Wii, which sold 1.35 million consoles during the same period.

The shortages also apparently are upsetting retailers, more of which find themselves "on allocation" -- meaning Microsoft is sending consoles to the locations where it is selling the best, while others may not be getting many consoles if at all.

Nintendo's Wii is expected to surpass Microsoft as the next-generation console with the largest installed base sometime this year, according to iSuppli. By the end of 2008, the Wii will have shipped 30.2 million units, surpassing the Xbox 360's install base of 25.7 million units, the firm projects.

Worse yet, the PlayStation 3 is expected to surpass Microsoft by 2011, reaching 38.4 million units. However, unlike the previous generation its market share could stay close to even, with the PS3 garnering a 35.4% share, Wii 34.8%, and Xbox 360 29.8%.

Looks like the PS3 is now outselling the 360, in it's last remaining home teritory.

http://www.gamesindustry...tent_page.php?aid=33153

Of course, the PS3 has been killing the 360 in sales in most other regions for a long while now, but finally it looks like the US have taken off their rose tinted 360 glasses, and see it for what it is, a unreliable, underspec'd pile of junk, with a few good games (because it rushed out a year early).

"In terms of software sales, however, the PS3 only managed to place one game in the top ten - Call of Duty 4, which came in at number eight. The Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4, on the other hand, remained in the top spot for the third consecutive month."

Wii is a system for kids and families, with titles liek Pony Stroking, and Animal Crossing.

360 is now a very tired system, that's reaching the limits of it's capabilities (Gears was rumoured to be using over 90% of the consoles power), the lack of standard HDD, and being numbered with last-gen DVD drive is also severely hampering it. With HD DVD now dead, where does that leave the Xbox360? The fact you need to spend $120 to buy a HDD to play GTAIV on the 360 speaks volumes.

The PS3 is just starting out, whilst it's hard to develop for, what that means is current games are just tapping into the console potential. Uncharterdd Drakes Fortune was reporting to be using just 10% of the console power, and the developers of Resistance Fall Of Man have gone on record to say that gamed used even less, with the Resistance 2 move more and more code to the 8 CPU cores.

A tired system what a load of crap. The PS2 reached its limit many years ago and good games were still coming out. I am amazed at how so many people still believe that in order for a game to be good it has to be the best looking thing on the block. You do not need the HD drive to play games people swapped disks on the PS2 for years and did people make a big deal about it like you rabid fan boys are doing. Move more and more code to the 8 cores that too is a load of crap. Where is the OS running oh yeah its on some of the cores so they are not free for use. That is cool that there is run to grow with programing on the PS3 but that does not mean the games will be any better than the competition. Reminds me of the childish comments of metfanant of who's is bigger than who's, what an immature child.

Toshiba are playing a smug game though.... its amusing how they are giving very neutral comments,

"Based on its technological advancements, we continue to believe HD DVD is the best format for consumers, given the value and consistent quality inherent in our player offerings"

Unbelievable. They are going to wait until all units or as many as possible have been put into the market fully knowing and probably planning the development of their own BD players. Business is business and hell if they are practically going to give them away then its not a huge loss the consumer ("Its also DVD upscaler!" - Toshiba) but they going suffer quite a lot of negative publicity on this one.

They will be just fine they make lots of other very good products. Consumers going in had to be blind to think that both formats would survive. I will most likely pick up another one as a backup unit when and if my present player fails. As far as negative press, no more than what is happening with the profile issues with blu ray. If I recall they have a lawsuit against them not HD DVD. Funny how something that Sony is involved in has a lawsuit.

Actually I think it would be a good move if AMD/ATI came out with one since they can make both the chips, graphics cards and the motherboards. BUT Nvidia would definitely have a better chance of getting the game manufacturers to make games for it plus since they bought Ageia they can put the physics chip on board. I can see Intel doing it also since they can also use their on chips and motherboard, plus they own Havok phisics so they can put that on board, they would just have to use either Nvidia or ATI for graphics (probably pick Nvidia) and they would have a pretty easy time getting game companies to make games for them also.

the PS3 sold 10 million plus consoles in the time span from November 2006 to November 2007...the Xbox 360 did not, that is a fact....but hell...ill use VGchartz's numbers....

ill try not to get too far ahead of you...at 16.98 and 9.94 respectively (from vgchartz)....thats barely more than a 7 million console difference....meaning...that even if the 360 BARELY outsold the PS3 this year with 9.941 million sales...that means the 360 would have sold ONLY 7 million consoles with its 1 year head start...but Microsoft was very big on the fact that they moved 10 million in the first year...but i guess you would know more about 360 sales right?....did i lose you yet??

the 360 needs a hardware redesign not because of capabilities, but because of terrible design...the 360 is a super powerful machine that was unfortunately designed by a software company...MS could not even get the power supply inside the console! and it STILL gets so hot to cause the mobo to warp and make the GPU pull away and cause the RRoD...so instead of really fixing the problem...they used beefier clamps, and added a 2nd heatsink....i will agree with you that they will not complete a redesign, because they probably are looking to release the new xbox in the near future...it would be just like MS to screw its console customers AGAIN by killing off a console prematurely...and they also realized they got totally schooled by Sony on the standard features front: built in wireless, standard hard drive, standard HDMI on all models, built in high def media player, built in support for multichannel uncompressed HD audio...

moving on...Sony CAN'T lie about the numbers...those are legit financial statements lol...thats breaking all sorts of laws to lie to your investors and such....not even Sony is THAT stupid...and this is the company that brought you rootkits and UMD's!!....

Sony does not release blu-ray sales numbers....because Sony does not sell ALl of the BD's....the recieve a royalty payment from the studios to create the discs, but after that the sales go to the different studios...not to mention im not sure how you can dispute the fact that blu-ray outsold hd-dvd EVERY single week in 2007....

here is the difference...Sony uses registered sales for their numbers....from what I understand MS uses (or at least used) consoles SHIPPED for their numbers...and because of that they were able to achieve their "first to 10 million" claim by stuffing every possible channel full of unsold consoles to make it seem like the sold 10 million....of course 30% of them will meltdown anyway so its no biggie...

and just as a disclaimer, Sony also used "consoles shipped" as their measure from the end of 2006 to the beginning of fiscal year 2007...so the first 2 Q's of sales are bloated...but as far as lifetime sales are concenred its still accurate because those "shipped" consoles were all early 60GB models which have now sold out...

is your head hurting too much yet? or are you just so upset that the "POS3" is outselling your beloved 360? or that "Blow-ray" killed hd-dvd

You don't know what will be the failure rate for PS3 until it starts getting abused. (AKA, playing game, what it was designed for.) For now, they are promoting it as a blu-ray player. I think Best Buy High Def Advantage all you to get PS3 as a Blu-Ray to get the HDA discount.

oh and we still have MGS 4 on the way....

Just because you like them does not make them good. I bought Ratchet and sold it didn't care for it. Fall of Man was ok, Gran Turismo as stated before I could careless. I hated all the others so expect nothing more this time around. Then there is MLB what a load of crap that is Sony sucks at making sports games always has always will. Unreal nothing compares to the PC version, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword were good but way to short. Onto Warhawk online only no thanks. Ok Cod4 better on the PC, DMC got it for the 360. Before you bash the 360 version how is Orange Box on the PS3? DMC better on the PS3 since when? The reviews say it is the same except the PS3 loads 4 gig on the HD so some parts load faster all because the blu ray drive is so fricken slow. Keep trying, believe it or not fanboy there are two other systems out there with very good games. You make it sound like the PS3 is the only system out there with good games. Get a life.

I can see your next post all kinds of childish name calling just like always.

never said the PS3 was the only console with good games...to say the PS3's library can equual the 360's is stupid, its been out for a year less...of course the 360 will have MORE solid titles...

find me a place that says there is a better baseball game than Sony's MLB the show...The Show 07 was considered easily the best baseball game last year and this year will be no different...

Orange Box on the PS3 sucks, but not because of the console itself...its because the dev dumped the port on freakin EA of all people...and EA did a piss poor port of the game...DMC loads data not because the BD drive is slow, but because Sony was forward thinking enough to insall a HDD in ALL models of the console...

and just because you don't like the games i named doesn't mean there are no good games for the PS3...you're argument refutes you're point...to say that just because i like them does not mean you do goes both ways...because you DONT like them, doesn't mean they are not good games...

This does dound highly suspect, they may be sold out in certasin areas but not here. There are stacks so high, you cant even see over them. Same goes for the PS3.

You can't find a single Wii though, or a DS for that matter. They just released a cobalt blue and black version on the 10th, so I picked one up for myself so I don't have to play a pink one.

By the way, has anyone striked every lane on the (Wii) progressive pin bowling stage without cheating on the last one? I've been trying forever and can't do it.

I have been able to get through the barrier lanes with a single ball. I've also come close to bowling a 300, all but one frame.

The Wii is a fabulous way to spend time with your family (if you are into that sort of thing), but my 6 year old daughter has grown fond of the 360, she loves the demo games that download automatically, then talks me into purchasing them from Live.

sales are SO strong that the "overpriced, dying, dead, POS" (according to these forums) PS3 outsold it during 2007...

I'm shocked that Ed was allowed to post that last part about the PS3 being expected to overtake the 360 in insall base....

Do people actually fall for this PR nonsense?

Obviously Ed Oswald does..

The 360 sales are globally on a serious decline, and this is Microsoft releasing press releases to try and convince people otherwise.

"Nintendo's Wii is expected to surpass Microsoft as the next-generation console with the largest installed base sometime this year, according to iSuppli."

Huh? The Wii surpassed the M$ 360 in worldwide sales about five months ago. The only market the Wii has not passed M$ in is the USA, which must be what they are talking about. Hell, the PS3 has been selling more hardware than the M$ 360 worldwide for the past several months.

The Wii sells more hardware and software weekly than any console except the Nintendo DS.

Personaly, I dont even use the motion sensing options anymore on the ps3 I did for about a week, but that also is annoying just like the wii.. so i disable the option in the games. I'm not saying ps3 motion sensing is better than wii, but it works great! (if your into that sort of thing)
