Microsoft claims 2-to-1 sales edge for GTA IV on Xbox 360

Microsoft says anecdotal evidence indicates its version of Grand Theft Auto IV is doing much better than Sony's, although Sony seems to dispute that claim.

So far, there are no hard numbers available, so Microsoft's claims cannot be verified. To its defense Sony is disputing the claims as inconsistent with its own reports, although it will not provide more data until further reports are received.

Either way, there also seems to be a boost in console sales as a result of the game's release on Tuesday. Both companies say console sales rose during the week, and data from NPD should provide more color in that department.

Microsoft said that while Xbox 360 sales should be up during the month of April, a bigger gain is likely to occur in May. Another assist to the Xbox 360 is its exclusive content which will not be available on the PS3 until this fall.

About one million GTA gamers played over Xbox Live during the first 24 hours, with 2 million achievements unlocked and 1.5 cross-game invites. Data on usage among PS3 users was not available.

Across both consoles, about nine million copies of the game are expected to be sold, with the game likely eclipsing Halo 3 as one of the fastest selling games in history.

Several retailers report either low stocks or being sold out altogether. On Amazon.com, the Xbox 360 version was out of stock for a period of time on Thursday, although it appears to be back in stock on Friday.

One difficultly in trying trying to calculate sales is that it depends on the Market.

For example, In Japan ( a big Gaming market per capitia), Xbox has had trouble cracking that market as has Apple with some of it's products.

In the U.S., I believe the xbox is outselling the others based on sales data though trying to decript the financial info from Japanese makers is sometimes difficult.

As far as the Wii is concern, this is a manufacturing issue or maybe a PR ploy to bolster sales in the 4th qtr. The simple fact is that no one can gey a Wii because they aren't being shipped.

So who's in the lead? it's hard to tell because of how fractured the gaming market is and how you define that market. Alot of the games that make up the bulk of the money earned (since all the gaming manufactures sell their "boxes" below cost) comes from games tied only to their system so it really depends on whether or not the Software end produces a lot of games and what system the games are made for and this tends to run in cycles. But the 4th qtr will tell the story.

I am not sure what software if any runs inside a monitor. As i have stated many times, i build my machines. I wanted a really good monitor, and the Dell 2405FPW was the best bang for the buck at the time.

My custom built machine dual boots XP for gaming and Ubuntu for real stuff.

I bought my wife a Mac Book Pro as she wanted something portable and i wanted a good quality computer which did not run the turd known as Vista.

FAIL..... again.

I'm not sure why this is significant... perhaps the percentage of each console owners buying GTA might be interesting... but that would just help define the demographics of each group. I have a PS3 and have never played ANY GTA games. I'm sure it is a great game, or people wouldn't be buying it. But, if I had an XBOX I wouldn't be buying it either... so what does it matter? Aren't they both the same for all intents? Maybe more content on the BD and better online features on Live?

When I read these articles and comments, I'd like some factual information on why each platform is 'better'. Does either have bigger textures? Better music? And I don't mean DTS vs. THX or some crap like that... or 45 fps vs. 50fps... Are they any multi-platform games that are SO much better that it is worth having both a PS3 and Xbox?

I find it interesting that the sony fanbois rip the 360 for failures but over at bluray.com there is a lot of people b****in& about the PS3 blu ray drive failing. I see nothing has changed with Sony's history with optical drives. The turds over there mention that they buy their systems at Costco since they have some unlimited return policy. The drve fails they get a new system then repeat the process. I wonder if Sony will offer to fix the issue for free.

I got GTA on the xbox, no problems here. Some reviewers went on to say that the graphics were a bit crappy, i think they are as outstanding as any other xbox 360 game out there.

I believe the xbox 360 will always outsell PS3 due to the fact it's easier to code for and game titles come out faster. The only game i'm dying to play on the PS3 is God of War 3 and it sucks to think i have to buy a £350 console just to play the next installation in my favorite game series. I couldn't give a s*** about blu-ray, who wants to pay over the odds for a movie when i can download HD content off the web for free? Oh well, at least Metal Gear Solid 4 will FINALLY be out by then :P

By the way, the coolest thing about owning a PS3 and a 360 is when a playable demo comes out, you have the ability to really see the difference in the consoles.

Burnout Paradise is a perfect example, it plays identical with the exception of the Sixaxis control on the PS3, which is cumbersome for past paced driving games. The difference is in the graphics, the 360 is smoother looking and the PS3 has very noticeable jaggies (badly rendered straight edges).

If you look at Grand Turismo HD on the PS3, they are not there, it's actually one of the best looking driving games I have seen. It's just very slow and boring in every way.

The Wii can't compete on any level with either adult system but is a hell of a lot of fun, especially when we have parties.

However, I just bought Rock Band and a second wireless guitar. This is the best party game, ever. I still want to get SceneIt, if anyone has tried it or owns it, let me know.

I am a manager at a Large gaming store in Australia, and I can say that the XBOX 360 version IS selling more than the PS3 version. That is to be expected, however, because there are more XBOX 360's in customers hands than the PS3. I got the PS3 version personally, my XBOX is on the fritz atm.

However, we found that we cannot reorder PS3 versions because they are sold out and are on back order. The 360 version we can still get quite easily!

And if your finding it hard to get your hands on PS3, but its easy to get 360, its because Sony has been bundling it's console with high-end bravia TV's, and that leaves very little for us retailers!

Does it matter which model? Ok....i bought the 40GB model. I am planning on throwing in a bigger hard drive when i need it since the PS3 allows you to use any hard drive unlike the proprietary M$ 360 hard disks which cost a fortune.

What else would you like me to tell you? Your feeble attempts to discredit me are laughable. I guess you are just jealous that i actually can buy a PS3.

You will need to replace that drive soon numb nuts with the huge installs required for games. The blu ray drive is so friggin slow they need to load most of the game on the HD. My 20 gig drive on the 360 still has lots of space and have about 30 games and tons of arcade games. Do that with an 80 gig PS3 jag off.

Anyone who can say that especially after buying a ps3 and wii must be on some serious drugs. No good games? come on you can do better than that. Why on earth did you buy a ps3? For GTA4? Any person who can for a moment put their hatred for MS away should be able to admit that the 360 does indeed have a decent selection of good games.
I used to have a 360, I sold mine but I sure as hell dont believe it doesnt have any good games. I still believe it has a better selection than PS3 and Wii combined.

So instead, go work for what really amounts to peanuts ( otherwise you would REALLY be able to buy all three systems, much like many here have ), and hope you can save that little extra money, along with your recycling ( with you we know you need every cent you can get your hands on ) and in a couple years afford the PS3 after a couple more price cuts. Why would i hold onto a console which had no good games when i owned it, suffers from 30%+ failure rates, scratches discs, burns down house, has peripherals which let out green smoke, etc...?

When I bought my console I based my decision on research. Future game titles (I would want to play), included hardware and hardware reliabilty. Fanboy thoughts never came into play and anyone who buys electronics that cost as much as these do because of fanboism is a nit. I went with the PS3 for two main reasons. The first was the bluray drive since I smelled bluray winning the war long before it did. The second was the countless hundreds of broken xbox 360's I saw all over the net. All of them with failed hard drives or fried components due to overheating. Then I read dozens of reports of noisy Xbox's buzzing away while people were playing. Then I went over to a friend of my brothers (the only person either of us knows who owns a 360) and tried it out for myself. After around 30 minutes of play, the thing was hot enough to cook an egg on, this while it sits open air on top of his etertainment stand. It also does hum (I would say hum not buzz) very loudly and the controllers are about as confortable as holding a pinapple. He rarely ever plays it and spends 90 percent of his time on his PS3 and his Wii. Sufice it to say I made my decision and bought a PS3, couldn't be happier.

Oh, Jesus Christ. Can all you little boys go play your consoles and get off the internet. I am so sick of hearing POS3 and CoXBox 360. Seriously, they are both great consoles, one being easier to program for, while the other is seriously one hell of a number cruncher. BOTH have their flaws which made neither of them a good buy early on. As for GTA IV, I haven't seen it on a PS3 yet, but my boy has a 360 and I have seen the game lockup a few times in the 2 days he had it. So I guess it goes to show NO console is perfect or the GOD BOX, they are basically the same. Get over it fanboys, none of you have any bragging rights over the other.

The only people you could trust for an honest opinion are people who own all three. There may be one or two in this entire forum.

Pit says he owned a 360, then sold it in fear of red rings, then picked up .... get this ..... a Wii as his main gaming console. On top of that, Mr Disposable income says he bought a 40GB non BC PS3 with GTA4 and no wireless, but he is going to add a bigger HDD later.

These are the idiots who own nothing and rant about things they don't have. There's only a few people like him on here but most only own a single console and cheerlead.

You can't win here, but you can sure make people look stupid, like pitdingo and his imaginary systems.

I have a friend who works at Gamespot and he said their was a boost in sales for the POS3 too. Instead of before when it was 5 Xbox 360s to ever POS3 sold now its 3 Xbox 360's to ever POS3 sold.

Plus the $ony POS3 has problems like the cell phone glitch.

The MS 360 does have better games because the 360 is easier to program games for. The PoS2 was hard to program and so is the POS3. MS makes it easier hence it makes better games.

This means they're going to wait until they can fabricate a report to show they're doing better. I brought my 360 over to a friends house that has a POS3 and their are noticeably more people on the 360 version than the POS3. Plus the game plays better because the 360 controller is better than the POS3 even though it doesn't have 6axis.

Don't know about the M$ 360 version, but on the PS3 version i disabled the internet and mine has not locked up all morning. Really is a good game.

Not sure how they did not catch that bug before launch.

I do not have it connected to my tv, i am running it on my Dell 2405FPW monitor which i also run my computer on.

As a matter of fact, yes. My Wii is on my old 32 inch Panasonic i have upstairs in the living room so i can play it while my wife watches TV downstairs on the big TV. I would have this in my office too, however, my wife likes to play it too and there is not enough room for the two of us to play it in there.

Are you happy now, or do you need more information for your fantasy?
