Microsoft cuts Xbox 360 prices across Europe

By Ed Oswald, BetaNews

Microsoft moved to adjust Xbox 360 prices in the European market, likely in an effort to both line up its cost with other regional markets while also taking into account a weakening US dollar.

The changes are taking place in both the UK and markets where the Euro is the currency of choice. In the UK, the base Xbox 360, the Arcade, will fall to £159, down £20, the standard model to £199 from £249, and the Elite £259 from its original £299 price.

In Euro markets, the new prices will be 199 euros for the Arcade, 269 euros for the Premium, and 369 euros for the Elite console: a drop of 80 euros across the board. At these prices, the cost will be more in line with what US consumers pay.

For example, the Arcade, which sells for $279 here in the US, will sell for an equivalent of $305 in Euro markets and $320 within the UK. Prior to this, the difference was more significant.

Another aspect of this price manipulation is that the Xbox becomes cheaper than the Wii, which sells for £179 in the UK and 249 euros across the rest of Europe. That could prove helpful in making the Xbox competitve against one of its biggest rivals overall.

No doubt, Nintendo will watch carefully to see how consumers respond to this latest salvo by Microsoft in the console wars. "Yes, the buyer segments for Wii and Xbox have been very different so far, but for price-sensitive customers the new prices may make all the difference," Strategy Analytics analyst David Mercer said.

Good one MinuteMaid, coming from the guy who doesn't own a 360 or a Wii.

Jealous cheerleading idiot, it's so obvious you feel like you are left out because everyone loves the 360 even with it's problems. The PS3 has been virtually perfect since day one, has Blu Ray, and no one still wants them here.

I own all three and the 360 is still the best followed by the Wii, then the PS3. I'll even take a DS over a PS3 anyday for fun factor and overall enjoyment.

MinuteMaid, I am sorry your budget limits you to one gaming system and having to be a trolling cheerleader. Maybe if you had some ambition, you could be a wasteful with money as myself.

People with as much hatred as you have are always angry lonely nobodys.

There is no value. The 360 is a sack of s***. The Arcade and Core even more. I mean come on, they can't play Burnout Paradise online, or GTA IV for christs sake, two of the biggest games this year.

Microsoft have no clue. They price the 360 to try and compete with the Wii, but it's not about price, it's about winning the consumer over. The Wii has done that, all people remember the 360 for, is it's crippling unreliability, and it's "not as good as the PS3 factor".

Its earning MS a profit, more than the ps3 is for sony.

"Microsoft have no clue."

Your hatred for ms, just because they are competing with sony is so childish. Its a free market and if they want to take on sony then let them go for it. The consumer decides, not any other industry for a change.

"They price the 360 to try and compete with the Wii, but it's not about price, it's about winning the consumer over."

Prices come down all the time in the tech industry, this is a fact and this competition benefits the consumer. Noone is forcing people to buy them, they do it out of choice.

"all people remember the 360 for, is it's crippling unreliability, and it's "not as good as the PS3 factor"."

They are games consoles. People use them to play games and be entertained. The wii demonstrates that not being as good, as you put it, as the ps3 is of no concern to people who want to play good games. If you want to blame anyone, blame the consumer.

You could allways ask sony to reduce the price of the ps3, this will have to happen but i doubt they will do it by much.

Get over it ... you can allways watch some films. I hear it is quite a good niche format player, and one day might even be feature rich once it has been patched to play the features that HD-DVD had as standard.

They had to do something. The PS3 has been outselling the M$ XBox 360 in Europe for a long time now. The Wii is so far in front, M$ will never catch it, so i would say this is directly related to the PS3 dominating the M$ Xbox 360.

The problem is the country that counts when it comes to gaming, America, doesn't want the PS3. They want Wii's and 360's.

dingo, you are pathetic by the way.

Sadly, as always, you've got that backwards.

Apart from *perhaps* China, which hasn't quite jumped completely into the fray yet, USA counts for more than the rest of the world when talking gross sales, my deluded little buddy.

huh? perhaps numbers have different meanings in your universe, but in this one, console sales in USA less than than that outside the USA. Same with software.

Hardware
Wii, PS3, and M$ XBox 360 sales in millions
25.5 others
24.95 USA

PSP and DS sales in millions
66.57 others
33.12 USA

So yeah, rest of world > USA. My clueless troll.

lmao..

Now show me Europe's numbers compared to the US.

Exactly.

See, I specifically mentioned China as being one of the only countries with the capability of competing against the US in sales numbers.

Sure, if you "team up" the rest of the world, you might get different results, but based on *your* original comment regarding Europe sales....

Sorry, the US is greater. :)

No, actually, it makes perfect sense unless you are trying to be "PitDingo" about it.

Read it again.

Except China, no other country even comes close to having the buying power in numbers of the USA.

Re-Read my original post, pitdimwit. That's exactly what I said.

No it is not what you said. The thread is about sales of video game consoles. You clearly said sales in the USA trump all which i proved to be a totally ridiculous statement.

Just admit it, you don't have a clue...everyone else on here already knows it.

that is true (few in the USA have bought the PS3), however when looking at the global market, the M$ XBox 360 is not selling outside of the USA. Even with a year+ headstart, the Wii crushed it, and the PS3 is(has been) outselling it weekly.

In case any of you are wondering Xbox 360 now has a small profit margin for Microsoft.

This update is well expected and is way over due. Its also great marketing because Xbox arcade can now be compared to a Wii price wise. Also the PS3 is still lacking a price cut making the Xbox a must get in Europe.
