Mozilla Offers Alpha of Firefox 2.0

Mozilla late Tuesday began the push towards Firefox 2.0 with the release of Bon Echo Alpha 1, designed to give a preview of the company's upcoming revision to its popular alternative web browser. One of the most notable new features of Firefox 2 will be its improved bookmark functionality, called Places.
Changes have also been made to tabbed browsing, support for SVG, and numerous bug fixes. While the release is not recommended for daily use, Mozilla is asking users to download, test, and provide feedback on the build. "The BonEcho Alpha 1 milestone is the first of many developer milestones on the path to Firefox 2," Mike Schroepfer, vice president of engineering for Mozilla, said in a statement.

I've given it a go but the Bookmarks sidebar is not actually available, making browsing a pain. Back to the previous version for me.

|I love Firefox, but I think I'll hold of for Beta phase to give this a go.

|Definately. I can't believe they released it to the public. What was the point to that??

|I don't use any extensions so I downloaded this new build. So far no crashes. Uses less memory than its predecessors too. Viewing this page alone is 21mb and each new windows is another 1mb much better than before. I used to always be using over 100mb with less than 10 windows/tabs. We finally have close buttons on each individual tab which is definately a big benefit. Looks promising.

|Remember - they say on the main page that it's for developer's only. I used to download anything and everything in the past, but FF1.5 is good enough on my system right now, so I can afford to wait for the finished version of 2.0.

|If you want to continue using your old profile and test this, your best bet is probably to download PortableFirefox, move your profile over(extensions/skins may break), and then install the alpha.

This is the first alpha test build. The likelyhood of any of your extensions from Firefox 1.x
working in this build is somewhere between extremely unlikely and totally non-existant.
There is a high possibility of bugs and crashes though, as you can no doubt imagine.

|I downloaded also and have easily gotten all but one of my extensions to work...
No need to uninstall the old ext...Here are 2 ways...
1) go to the ext's authors homepage, and install your ext. THIS TIME check the "override maxversion compatibility checking" button on left side of the installation window then install.
2)if you are a bit more daring... on the authors home page, right click the extension, chose save link. Then go the saved directory and open the ".xpi" with winzip, winrar, 7zip..... look for and extract the "install.rdf" find the line that has the "maxVersion" statement and change the maxVersion from 1.5 to 2.x example 2.5+ then put it back into the ".xpi". Close winrar and open Bon Echo and drag -n- drop the .xpi to a blank area of an open web page and allow the install... then restart Bon Echo.... GOOD LUCK

|They changed the way profiles and extensions work in an effort to provide better security and performance is the understanding I have... which means that they're fixing some bugs and adding some new capabilities for developers (which means mostly squat to us as users). FYI, extensions are almost always written to be version-specific, so you'll probably experience this every new release you get. I almost never install a Firefox build within 72 hours of its release, so that extension writers have a chance to release their updates. :)
