Nokia sponsors a contest for Xbox Live theme builders

Disruptive Media Publishers today announced a Nokia-sponsored Content Creation Challenge aimed at giving artists the opportunity to have their work offered through the Microsoft Xbox Live Marketplace.

Disruptive Media is best known to gamers as a company created to market photos and themes to the main demographic of young, male gamers who play the Xbox 360 online.

The contest specifically calls for artists to create an original theme that can be uploaded to the Content Creation Challenge Web site. Xbox 360 themes allow users to change what they see on the screen when they're navigating around the Xbox Live Marketplace, in the same way a custom faceplate changes the way the Xbox 360 looks. Users can find some themes available for free, but many of them cost a few Microsoft Points.

All user-created themes must pass an "internal quality review process" before the public has the ability to vote on their favorite themes. The theme that receives the most community votes will be offered through the Xbox Live Marketplace. Along with having a theme published, the winner will also receive a 42-inch HDTV, surround sound stereo, Xbox 360 games, Blu-ray player, and Nokia N81 phone.

A second contest includes a "community score" that is calculated on the number of votes a user has if affiliated with a community partner. The community partner will also win a wide variety of prizes that includes Xbox 360 games and several store gift cards.

The contest is now open to all contestants and will close on April 28. The contest's Web site offers rules and more details.

Microsoft and its partners have launched similar contests to help create content for the Xbox Live Marketplace and Arcade, but winning entries seem to go unnoticed by Xbox Live users. For example, the "Dream-Build-Play" contest was officially announced late last year, and Microsoft has selected five winners for the 2007 contest, though the popularity of each user-created game has frankly been difficult to gauge. Microsoft is preparing to launch the 2008 "Dream-Build-Play" contest.
