PS3, Xbox to soon get Twitter, Facebook integration

By Tim Conneally | Published November 12, 2009, 3:01 PM

Microsoft has kept few secrets about its upcoming Dashboard update, which will give Xbox Live Gold members Twitter, Facebook, and Last.fm integration on November 17.

Facebook on Xbox Live

"Xbox Live's differentiator has always been our community, and we've already seen a tremendous response to these features in our public preview. It's the community that drives us forward and allows us to pioneer new ways of connecting people through the entertainment they love," Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten said.

But accidentally leaked screenshots of Facebook running natively on the PlayStation 3 have caused a little more of a stir among the video game media. As usual, this is because of the element of mystery involved, and also Sony's track record of giving out for free what Microsoft charges for. Sony has not yet issued any comments on the leaked images, but Eurogamer today said that there will be more information on them "very shortly."

Betanews sent an inquiry to SCEA this afternoon, and will report on its response if and when it comes.

might be useful for people who don't own one of those computer things... both consoles make excellent media centers, both are amazing for gaming, and now they both do facebook?

last.fm might be cool... if you can run it as background music in games, but in my experience, moving computer tasks onto consoles is almost always cumbersome and annoying.

The PS3 browser is good for some things but it does suck. The Wii's is so slow and hard to use sometimes. Facebook could be cool on the 360 I guess, it depends on what it lets you do.

Having Facebook, Twitter, & Last.fm on the Xbox 360 is very handy! And, while the Xbox 360 is the only gaming system in this generation to not have an internet browser, I think it's a smart move on what they're doing.

Do you really want your Xbox 360 (without anti-virus software) on the internet, prone to viruses and being hacked? I sure don't!

"...and also Sony's track record of giving out for free what Microsoft charges for."

What track record?

So the PS3 has a "free" online network, whereas the Xbox 360 is a subscription-based service. That's hardly a "track record".

Sony does have a track record of offering "free" services only after class-action lawsuits... specifically regarding repairs on their game consoles for known defects (that carried over across multiple hardware revisions) that clearly should have been covered under warranty, but originally were not.

Microsoft does have a track record of fixing these issues for free, and sometimes offering free 12+1 month Xbox Live subscriptions.

Can't these platforms just run a regular browser like Firefox? Why is this news?

The PS3 can, but its browser stinks.
The 360 has no browser.

It's news because apparently not everyone knows about the capabilities of these machines. ;)
